Baby Quilts

Hi all, I'm a veteran lurker and know I can always get the best advice here. I am planning a baby quilt, and wonder if there are any rules about size. The instructions I am using are for a 38 X 48 size, seems a little small to me. I think I should add a row of blocks, end up with 48 X

  1. The smaller one is practical for backing fabric, but I don't want that to be the only consideration.

Any thoughts? Thank you! felwyn

I'd go with the bigger size too. Some of the baby quilt patterns are too small imo. They are outgrown too quickly. Oh and - we want to see it when you are finished!

I like to make baby quilts about 48" x 60" and I've had great feedback from the recipients. At a baby shower, most quilts are tiny, for a bassinet or crib, and are quickly outgrown. My larger quilts seem to be the ones that the moms tell me the kids like to cuddle up with and drag around when they start walking.

I've just put a co-ordinating block/panel on the back of the quilt I'm just quilting to 'stretch' the backing. Works well and makes the back interesting.

48 X 60 is a size I like, but I think this quilt would look best square, so I'll go with 48 X 48. Thanks for all your suggestions and comments. I have another question, think I'll start a new topic. :) felwyn

I'd say go with your gut. I've only made two baby quilts. One recently, which wasn't very big but is fine for a newborn. The other was supposed to be crib size. I talked to the parents and they wanted something the baby could grow into. It wound up being 5 feet square. They folded it up when she first came home, used it to lay her on the floor at times, folded up (used fleece for the backing so it was ultra soft). I don't know what they did after I moved away as I've lost contact with them.

Still, if you think 38 x 48 is too small, go ahead and add a row of blocks.

I've learned the one thing for sure in quilting is there are no set rules when creating something of your own two hands, your heart and love. :)

And if you don't want to add more blocks try a pieced border on two sides or all four sides- it will work well to make the quilt larger. It can be as simple as two or three rows of scrappy 2 in. squares or a braid or a simple or fancy appliqué border. Whatever tickles your fancy!

My guild has a group that makes charity quilts for the younger set, all of our fabrics are donated, therefore, we try to keep our width to

42" or less. The length can, of course. be l>The smaller size is OK, but IMO you would do well to add another row

Felwyn: "Veteran Lurker" eh? That tickles my funny bone. I agree 38 by 48 is a bit small. I like 50 by 50 up to 60 by 60. That provides a great quilt for floor play for the infant, and will still be good for a toddler snuggle quilt. Please visit more often! PAT in VA/USA
