back again

After a 'very' long absence here due to health concerns I am hopefully back. I have so missed being here too. I looked at some older messages I kept and discovered it has been close to 2 years since I posted here. So much has happened. So good and some not so good. The important thing however is that I am still alive and kickin' and DH (Jerry) is still alive. He still has a lot of very good days where the Alzheimer's doesn't seem to be so bad. My own health has stabalized a great deal, though I spent the summer flat on my back. I am up and walking again and back in physical therapy 3x a week. Over the last year I have lost over 70 pounds (gained back 10) and am thinner than ever. Quilting wise being on my back in bed I have been very busy. I have completed several WIP's and have one on the hoop now that I am hand quilting. It is a Grandmother's Flower Garden (king size). This is definitely a quilt that can be done when you have to lay in bed. I also have a log cabin (queen size) that is ready to quilt. I will start the hand quilting on it as soon as I finish the GFG. However the grandist quilty thing that I have had happen is the enlargement of my fabric stash. Three weeks ago I had the opportunity to purchase a portion of a fabric stash from a family member who's grandmother was a quilter. Grandma passed away and the family is getting ready to sell her many possessions. This includes her fabric stash. This woman had 2 very large bed rooms wall to wall in fabrics!!!! One room was quilting fabrics. To make the story very short my fabric stash went from about 1200 yards to over 4500 yards of fabric! I am up to my eyeballs in the most delicious fabrics imaginable. On top of all that I was able to get an entire new bolt of Warm and natural (30 yards) for $10.00. This 3300 yards of fabric cost me the grand total of $400. DH gave it to me as an early Christmas present. My sister who is getting ready to retire and knew a good thing when she sees it went last week and purchased about 800 yrds for $150. She has spent the last several days going through her new stash and getting so excited about starting to learn to quilt. There were so many designer fabrics I couldn't begin to tell you all that was there. The origional Aunt Grace 1930 repoductions alone filled an entire shelf in my stash. I suppose I could go on for a very long time this morning but I also know when to stop. So I am looking forward to trying to keep up with the message board. Right now I am fumbling around with the new digest form that I am not use to so this might take a bit. Feels good to be back. julia

Well, Julia, this is a nice surprise!

Let's hope you can stay well again - at least vertical! Though you seem to be able to do as much when you are horizontal as most of can up and about. Good on you! Don't overdo things, and look after yourself as well as DH (sorry about the Alzheimer's; that's tough). . In message , juliasb writes

Welcome home Julia! Wow! I'm envious of your new "stash"! So glad that you've been able to quilt some. Here's hoping that your health continues to improve and that Jerry has more good days than bad.

You and me both.!!! DH's decline has been very painful for him. He still is at a point where he is aware most of the time. It is those times where he is not that is most troubling. My quilting gives me an out when I most need it. Except for PT I am home all the time now. My niece picks me up once a month for grocery shopping and that is about it unless something very special comes up. It just plain feels good to be back. julia

Yepper and hopefully to stay around for a good while too!!!! The PT part is the better part of my week. I get picked up by the Senior Citizens bus taken to the PT where I work out on a bike, treadmill and total gym. Then do some weight training, and stretching exercise before heading into the pool for more aquatic exercise. Get dry and dressed. Go upstairs and while waiting for the bus to return to take me home, I sit and work on the dresden plate blocks I am making for my next quilt. Always busy with needle in hand. julia

Humm... I suppose with the help of google earth it should be pretty easy to find. just look for the thing that is as big as the Great Wall of China. That unusally shaped object should be my fabric stash buldging out onto the lawn. julia

It's so great to see you back again, Julia! We've missed you. And, as the others have said - I envy your "stash-building"!!! May you have good health and get to use it all up! (or just fondle it all )

Julia!!!!! Welcome back!!! It's so good to hear from you, that you are Jerry are doing ok. Congrats on the massive growth of your fabric stash. That's great. I can't wait to see pics of the Grandmothers Flower Garden. I've often thought of doing one but the thought of all those Y-seams just gives me the heebeejeebees. I've got a tumbling blocks top that I've pushed into the corner because of them. Anyway, it's good to see you back. I hope and pray that things continue to be stable for you.

Hugs, Mika

The stash is a deterent from my stitching to be sure. Today I plan on taking out at least 2 stacks and evenly folding them. I want everyting to look just so. This will also give me a chance to place each fabrics location in my brain so I can 'hope' to find it when I want to use it.
