Batting for garment?

Have any of you made a quilted garment? What batting did you use? I don't want this to be super thick ... but I do want the batting to be enough to give a bit of shape to the garment. I can't imagine using the quilts I usually make as a garment. But I know there is some batting that people use for making quilted garments.

Any suggestions?

Hobbs Thermore is specifically intended for garments. I used it in the bargello jacket I made, and it was the perfect weight. I did do another jacket that was simply a flip and sew on muslin & lined with a polyester lining; it is a lighter weight jacket, which is what I wanted. The muslin gave it plenty of body. Some people also use pre-shrunk flannel for garments. There are photos of the bargello jacket with Thermore batting at . The other jacket is pictured at

What kind of flannel? Is there a specific type or weight or brand? Most of the flannel I see in stores around here is colorful and extremely expensive. I would have a hard time using $10 a yard flannel for lining.

I use the flannel from JoAnn - it's $2.99 and often on sale - comes in white, and many other solids. I wash it in hot water and dry it first. You can either foundation piece right to the flannel or quilt patchwork to it. I usually have a separate lining - something that will slide easier over whatever you're wearing under the vest or jacket.
