Bindings....again

Well, I can't find the beautiful blue fabric that was to bind my quilt, you know the one that matches the outer border. Go figure. So I thought, well, I'll just use that funky gold. After all, it's in the middle of the quilt, it should look ok on the border too right? I think I'll post a picture so you can see....

My mindless ramblings do have a point. I want to know what you think of the gold for the outer border, and to help me think this one through before I cut and sew. Here's what I am thinking. If I cut the fabric into 4" strips, then I fold it in half to be 2", then use either a 1/2" or 3/4" seam allowance, I should have a nice wide binding that looks almost like a thin border right? Anyone know what the actual size of the binding would be? I know if I do a 2 1/2" strip with 1/4" seam allowance it'll end up being about a 5/8" binding...and I don't want to go quite that thin...at least I don't think I do.

Hang on, let me post that picture for you....

Thanks! I had Eileen from Designing Quilts do it on her longarm for me. I love the design she picked and the thread she chose! I am a firm believer in having someone else do the quilting now that I have had that experience!

Gorgeous quilt!!!!! However, it's the pic on the right on my computer I don't know about the gold binding. Might be too light? And draw your attention to the outside. I guess I like to have the darkest for the binding myself. But that's just me.

Howdy! I'm with Ann; the pic is on the right side and dark binding will finish the quilt without glaring "Look at me! I'm gold binding!" YMMV

Here's my 2 cents...not that it's worth anything. I think the gold, particularly the one you already have a small border in would be fine for binding, but I would make it thin. But I like thin bindings....I always cut mine 2 1/4", then fold. Oh, and just so you know the quilt is on the "other" left side. Looks great by the way!

I really think that a really dark blue or even black would look great. The gold binding would really stand out. I also agree that if you have to go with the gold, then make the binding very thin so it acts as a frame for the quilt.

It is a very lovely design and very well executed! The quilting just sets off the whole thing in a wonderful way!! My congratulations to you!

Dannielle, I think the gold will actually look very nice as the binding! As for the width, I can't help you there. I prefer very narrow bindings (my personal preference only). Just make sure you have batting enough at the outer edges so that you can completely fill that binding; and empty binding looks a little odd. ;)
