I've dug through my UFO pile and tackled the Sampler of Psalms quilt I started a number of years ago. But, now I'm stymied again: to border or not to border or how many to border...you get the picture?

Thanks Polly! I almost made it into a "triptych" with the centre tree panel hanging separately flanked by two panels of blocks. The only thing that stopped me was the realization that I'd have to hand sew the binding on three quilts instead of one! [How's that for a lazy woman's design choice?] Now I'm looking at the photo and thinking 'hmm...should I go back to the three panel idea?'

Ok, so you have a white border: I would love to see the blue *and* gold then: ie blue followed by gold with a gold binding. If you just have the white, then a white binding - or a multi-coloured binding.

personally, I think that a 5 inch border in the same white on white, with prairie points border in a mix of the solids used in the quilt would look smashing. You could quilt the white border with a coordinated color thread in a nice repeated pattern.

I like the idea of the narrow gold & wider blue with either a blue or gold binding, especially if the quilt is going to hang on a white or very light wall. It needs some separation from the wall. If you don't add more borders, bind in white.

When I looked at the photo - maybe it is the angle or the lighting - but it appeared that each segment of colour was separate from the rest (like items pinned on a bulletin board) - again, it could also be the 'white' effect of all that background fabric. I would have to play with more colour for the borders and also thread colour for quilting all that white. I'd probably remove the white border or reduce its dimensions in favour of the blue/gold fabrics - 3" wide =3D blue on the left side and bottom; gold on the top and right side; mitred corners. It's a personal thing that I don't like white unless it is munged with shades of marble. jennellh
I agree. When I looked at the quilt I thought that it "should" be in
3 sections. As for sewing the binding on, do it by machine. Make sure the binding is wide enough to wrap past the seam line on the back. Glue stick or WonderTape it down, then carefully machine stitch in the ditch from the front. You could use invisible thread or a white that matches the border and go for it. Instead of glue stick or Wonder tape, you can also try Sharon Schamber's method using Elmer's School Glue . I've used her method a couple times and it worked great. I just used the glue tip that was on the bottle, not her special extra-fine tip.

Blue border & binding, gold optional. I'd bind it in that red. The way it is now it doesn't look complete. The triptych effect is too glaring, or more like a quilt in the middle w/ a row of blocks on each side, connected by white fabric and then left hanging out there... until it's put together... sometime. The blue would tie it all together, having the darker border says "I meant to stop here." Gives it that "framed" look. There's plenty of white & gold in it already; neither color gives enough definition to say "Finished", they just fade away on the edges. Adding a red binding around a blue border takes you back thru' the color scheme, to the Tree (of Life?) in the center. Ps. 1:3 Nice bit of completion in the circle of life.

yup..that's exactly the effect I was hoping for: I wanted each of the blocks to stand apart from the others...."like items pinned on a bulletin board" is a good description. I do plan to quilt leaves and perhaps apples in the white, but don't want to take away from the individual character of the blocks: each represents a different Psalm and my thought was that separating them with negative space would help the viewer to concentrate on each one separately.
General consensus seems to be leave it as is. SinceI tentatively plan to hang it over the bed in our bedroom, and since plans also include painting our bedroom light gold, I think white will work better than gold binding [I'm a bit worried that the golds will scream at each other]
