Yay! top is quilted

Ok, my Orange Crush Mystery top is quilted, now I need to piece the borders but I'm so happy to have this much done. I quilted it in 3 sections - quilting 1 then adding the next and quilting it. When I added my next sections, I stitched the new top piece on thru all layers. I think next time I would leave a little more unquilted at the edge of the first piece and only join the top to the top so I wouldn't have the straight stitching line on the back. I plan to add the borders the same way stitching thru all layers.

Right from the beginning I planned this as a utility quilt. Something to get me back actually quilting, and using up stuff I had here. And boy am I rusty! I did an allover stipple and I'm sure glad there really are no quilt police! LOL!

Oh well, I've had fun working on this. Now I need to clean up my mess as I leave again tomorrow (6 hour drive) to pick up another grandbaby (7 yr old) to bring him home to stay with us for about 8 days. Don't imagine I will get much sewing done while he's here.

Well, off to work.

Hope you all have a great day!

And why not? You may have another 'quilter in the making' ...8 days...you have enuf time to make him a pillow together that he can take with him

Or - you could say that 8days is just about enough time for him to make his first quilt to take home with him. The other grandkids would hear about his prize and then more of them would want to come to gran's house to make quilts of their own =3D more gran-time with the kiddies. Enjoy him while he's with you, jennellh.

If you browse thru the other albums (not much there) in the grandbaby one is Alyssa, she's the one I spent last weekend with now 11 months old. Ivan - the 7 yr old I am about to go get is not in there. Maybe I'll get pics of him quilting while he's here! *grin*

I am a big fan of "lap quilting", and really despise frames and hoops. I make sandwiches about 3' square, baste carefully, and quilt each one separately, leaving about a 1" to 1.5" all around. Then I'm ready to assemble the sandwiches, I stitch the top layer, then the bottom layer, and then do the quilting along those lines. Thus, my work is portable, comfortable to deal with, and never shows from the top at all. As to the back, if you overlap the backing fabric a bit and tuck the top under, you can do a blind stitch, and the final result blends in very nicely. Or, you can get commercially-made seam binding tape, iron the center fold open, and blind stitch that over the back joins.

Hey great thought ladies!

Now why didn't I think of that. At 7 he is certainly old enough to learn to sew. He's kind of a quiet kid, really likes to do outdoor things, but I'm sure we will have time to do indoor things. I was thinking about craft ideas but quilting would be great fun.

Thanks

Marilyn

it was the last mystery quilt that she did. The next one is supposed to start about Labour Day. I found it was great to be told what to do step by step. Not that I couldn't do it on my own, but life has been pretty busy for me and not having to think too much was great. I used the same basic color as she did except she has blue where I have green. The red & black for the stars and the green and orange for the album block were planned the rest is cut from scraps. To make the quilt big enough I am planning 2 solid borders and two pieced borders. I think I will put a 3 inch solid border first- then a 3 inch pieced border using up some of the partial blocks I have left over and making more. Then another 3 inch solid border then another row of 9 inch blocks - alternating the two blocks that are in the top. Then a solid binding. I'm thinking of using the red, black, orange &/or green as my "solids" depending on if I have enough of them left.

Marilyn: Great quilt!! Bonnie Hunter will be at my guild this weekend for lectures at meetings, and for classes. I did not enroll in a workshop, but I do look forward to the lectures. I'll report afterwards. PAT in VA/USA

Okay, so today I was at the Day Chapter of my Guild. Bonnie Hunter gave a wonderful trunk show. One of the quilts was the Orange Crush quilt she has on her web site ... it is twice as nice up close and personal. Bonnie brought LOTS of quilts ... and said she has a whole stack of other quilts for the Night Chapter meeting Tuesday. Wow, she really is productive. Bonnie's topic was about scrap quilts, and that is what she showed us. Lots of luscious scrap quilts ... Roberta, you should have been here! Later, she was part of the group for lunch at a local restaurant. Her personality on and off 'stage' is the same ... friendly, courteous, light hearted and sincere. I look forward to the next lecture, as well as her upcoming book. PAT in VA/USA PS: Website is

You are right, I should have been there! What's wrong with this picture? Maybe Bonnie wants to travel a bit farther?

Roberta...I've noticed that about groups here also. "Membership closed" . One group I once belonged to took a vote on that one time but it was defeated. I think it has to do with the venue where they meet...they can't accomodate anymore people. Do you suppose that is why? Seems like they should have given you a reason though. Mary

Do you have a quilty technique that you could teach them? Seems like if they invite others to share their quilts they should be open in their membership... Do you think they were kind of scouting ??? Just my thoughts...Mary
