Shadow Quilt border ideas...revisited

Tell me what you think? I am liking the wider striped border but will have to come up with a cornerstone block because the stripe runs parallel to the selvage edge.

On page 1 of the 2010 wips album is another table runner that I have put together from the leftover blocks from yellow and the lime runners. jennellh

Usually, if I see something that someone else likes, but I'm not keen, I'll not say anything. This time, Jenn, I like the quilt so much that I have to tell you that I really don't like the stripe fabric with it at all. I think it takes away the whole impact of the shadow blocks. I love the binding with the dark fabric. I don't even like the stripes in the last picture on the narrow, double border side. If you want to introduce colour into the border, could you not use one or other of the yellow or turquoise? Or, even two adjacent borders of the yellow and two of the turquoise (I've done that on a definitely two-colour quilt and it is effective) with the background fabric, same principle as the right hand border of the last picture? I hate being somewhat negative; I hope you don't see it as that. . In message , Jennifer in Ottawa writes

Well. I liked the tiny picture just fine. When I saw Pat's comments I went back and looked at them enlarged. I agree. When I could really 'see' the stripes, I thought they were busy or distracting. We don't mean to drive you crazy but could you try Pat's suggestion up on the wall and show us what that looks like? Polly

The narrow red border looks good - the Sairey stripe! for those of us who recall Mz Sairey's borders. It pops the yellow and blue blocks.

Pick up the blues and yellows on something other than the striped fabric. It seems to dull out the yellow and blue in the body of the quilt. Just my humble opinion,

I like the idea of stripes...but not that particular fabric. For me it reads as having too much green and so doesn't go with the main part of the quilt. Maybe it looks different in real life. I like the narrow border with the dark fabric better. And Pat's idea of turquoise and yellow sounds good too. A combination of the the three perhaps?

You'll know you have it right when you're satisfied and don't have to ask for ideas, Allison

Howdy!

What Pat said, yeah. Busy border isn't necessary, and really detracts from what your quilt is saying, "Shadows". The background is fine, got more of it? A wider border of that kind of neutral will showcase your shadows, and the binding done in the dark "shadow" (sounds like a t.v. series) will add the perfect frame that says, "Done!" No offense, but a "sarah strip" in a bright contrast just blows away the center patches. A narrow border just looks skinny.

Could you border it w/ the cat in pic 11? Now that would make the quilt!

What about a 'shadow border', background, yellow, turquoise, black on the right-hand and bottom borders?

Just a thought.

I really love the quilt, just beautiful.

Coming late to the party, I'll just add a comment or two. Stripe fabric does not play nicely with the lovely shadow squares. Red is too distracting. I would like to see a plain grey border (that background fabric you've used) in a compatible width. Then bind the right and bottom with that dark black (the shadow fabric in center) and bind the left and top sides with the plain grey background fabric. That would mimic the shadows. Great colors and layout, btw. Pat in Virginia

Oh Jen I like the first with possibilities - definitely the winner, It immediately took my eye. The others definitely detracted completely. Just love the design of the quilt.
