...what this is really called and where I can get hold of them?

It looks a great idea, as spool knaves (or thread devils) are very expensive, if you can ever find one, and this looks like a good addition to my growing chatelaine.

I like to carry my stuff around and am always on the look-out for useful-boxes (as you know). I went to my local 'you-can-buy-anything- here' shop and they weren't much help. Is it something particularly USA?

I'm still holding out for the eye-bolts, but again, they seem only to be made in fat sizes so far.

And yes, I know I could fashion one of these things with a toothpick and an elastic band, but this looks good too! :)

Howdy!

The "fastener" looks like a shackle; maybe a bow shackle;

- spring-loaded - that's a bit different... snap shackle, perhaps. Marine supply has them. Or a halyard shackle. Wouldn't have to be spring-loaded, just the regular bolt thru' the shackle would hold a spool of thread.

Thank you, it's the fastener, I'm after. As I say, I think I can probably get hold of the eye bolts.

We have a ship's chandler locally, so I'll try them. I agree that hollow would be perfect. I'll work on that.

Bow shackle sounds like what it is, but I've never heard of a snap shackle.

I've printed out a photo, but I'm not very hopeful.

Wouldn't it be nice if you could Google a picture?

Thanks, all, I knew someone would know something. Nel (Gadget Queen)

Nel, you can Google a picture: Google, Images. It's wonderful. A lot of my work has started there! The germ of an idea, then a picture and ... off we go! If that's what you meant, of course? . .In message , Sartorresartus writes

Eye bolts at B & Q, but couldn't find any traces of the mini loo-roll holders.

It's the mini loo-roll holder I need, not the eye-bolts.

I agree wholeheartedly about the staff in Homebase and Focus, though B&Q are improving since they took on the Policy of employing retired professionals in their stores. I went with a tile-grout problem and the need for some special bed-bolts to the big store in York and had half a dozen people discussing the rights and wrongs of the thing; one who had been a sparks, one a plumber and one a plasterer amongst them. OK it took a while, we didn't find the bolts (no longer made) and the tiling problem will only be able to be fixed come Summer (when we can afford to de-commission the Aga), but it was very useful and utterly engaging hearing them all argue the toss.

I've been Googling this thing for a number of days, in fact that's where I found the picture in the first place, but I wish you could use a picture to find a picture. But, now, armed with these new names I may be able to get further. Thank you all very much.

I'll let you knw how I get on.
