Chalk lines for marking tops

Dumb question--Has anyone ever tried those snap-a-chalk-line thingies for marking long straight lines on a quilt top? Might be very useful for marking large cross-hatch grids?

Be careful about which chalk line you get. Some of the ones made for construction (especially the blue ones) aren't pure chalk, and tend to stain. :(

I swear by my laser level. (

, NAYY) I use it with a chalk pencil or chalk wheel, especially for squaring up. Works great, and it's so much fun when DH has to come to ME and ask to borrow a tool. *grin*

Thanks, Kathy. I had never thought of using a laser level for my quilting. I have bought them as gifts for others in the family but we don't have one. Do you think I could get away with buying one for my husband as a gift and then borrowing it back? Since he doesn't build anything anymore he might catch-on that it isn't really for hime. Guess I will put it on my gift lift.

I think that is a new but wonderfully appropriate term! implying also that gifts to you should be held high and given with thanksgiving and praise? :-)

One word of laser level caution...if you have kitty QIs, keep them out of the working area. Mine are a pain as it is, trying to inspect and pull pins and test batting, when I work on the floor. A laser would be an invitation to chaos. chipper :O

Fortunately I sew better than I type.

maybe so but i thought it was a wonderful turn of phrase. and the conclusion was undoubtely correct for someone who quilts and gives away all the love that is sewn in a quilting project!

Actually, I type heaps better than I sew but my brain runs about 33 rpm behind my fingers. Fortunately, I'm not in charge of anything really important. Polly

I would consider "Gator Guardian" a pretty important "anything"!

Maggie, QI #2, will actually jump on my sewing table when I'm machine quilting. I assume she wants a close inspection of the work. Scares the jibbers out of me. I don't want her to get hurt. Luckily for her, I'm quick to release the peddle. I really wish she wouldn't do that.

My QI, Maggie Belle, likes to sit behind the machine as I'm piecing to watch things come out the back. Maybe she's easily amused. She also likes to watch the toilet after its been flushed.

My Sugar likes to watch the water go around in the commode too. She also sits behind the machine and thankfully stopped swatting at the thread as it flys through. My DH says that with brains the size of walnuts, the amusement areas are not to large. Fiona has a grand old time chasing the little plastic tops from water bottles. Go figure. I guess, whatever floats your boat.
