EQ 5 question....and a mini OT rant

Scroll down one full paragraph if you'd rather skip the rant.

Wow.....stupid Windows just MAJORLY peeved me. I had to call Geek Squad over to fix this one, and I'm pretty well-versed in the PC troubleshooting area. Apparently, Windows decided to screw up the BIOS somehow and get confused as to which video card to use (the onboard one, or the expensive video card I purchased not six months ago). So the monitor would just go black. Nothing. At any rate, SEVEN HOURS later and $250 poorer, I'm back. Now if I could get my new charter highspeed account to let me post again, I wouldn't have to use this account anymore and I could get rid of it. At any rate, here's the question:

I'm going to purchase EQ5 (and put it on the laptop, not this junkheap), but I really don't want to drop $130 on it at one of my hugely overpriced LQS. Anyone have a cheaper place they know of? I've seen it on eBay for around $80, and that's probably where I'm heading unless I get a good tip from one of the wonderful folks here.

commiserations on the puter probs. argh thats a heap to drop for techs to fix it. i'd send a copy of the bill to billy boy and see if they got any ideas if this is likely to happen again and if so will they cover the cost next time at the very least. sounds like must of been a bug in Win OS , grrrrrrrrrr.

from what i've heard EQ6 should be out early next year. you could wait for that or wait til it comes out and then EQ5 will be cheaper. i have EQ4 and am waiting anxiously for EQ6. each time they upgrade the new stuff is amazing from what i hear. roll on 2007. :) jeanne

remember -- in order to qualify for the next upgrade you will need to be the registered user for the copy you purchase. If you purchase via ebay -- if the previous owner registered

-- you may not be able to.... Sometime ebay items are brand new... ] but something to consider and watch for.

The EQ site will not undersell their distributors so it is not always the cheapest place to buy. They will even tell you that in the EQ Forums.

NAYY - but am a past satisfied customer. EQ6 is due within

6-9 months (if they release on time, which didn't happen last time) but the cost to upgrade is reduced for those with earlier versions already.

Some of the packages from Soft Expressions include books - but don't go overboard before you figure out what you want to do with the software.

If you haven't used EQ before and you get stuck - give a yell here (lots of users) or come on over to the Virtual Quilting Group (all rctq members) and we should be able to help you.

I made a deal with the LQS to split the difference between their price and on-line price.

If you belong to AQS you can order EQ using their discount program. Can't remember the percentage of discount, but membership is 20, and you get 5 really good magazines per year and can order discounted books.

Looking around this morning, I'd say eBay is your best bet. But I agree with others here, look for an new copy, not a used one.

You can get it directly from the company for $110. PlanetPatchwork has it for only $88. Personally, that's who I'd go with. I admire them for the work they do providing means for sewists to communicate. They were among the first to provide machine specific mailing lists.

I bought mine from Planet Patchwork. They have the software bundles with the books, and I got a $10 discount on any future book I bought. I have purchased other things from them before, and have never had a problem. I would imagine that Ebay's stuff is used, and you won't be able to upgrade to EQ6 when it comes out.

I prefer sewing with my SM rather than my computer. :>)

Have you looked at the electic quilt website? I don't know that its any cheaper, but something to keep in mind. If you buy a used copy you may not get tech support, and you certainly won't qualify for an upgrade price on EQ6.

On eBay you can almost always get brand new softare, music CD's, and DVD's if you look for new ones.

Hi Anastasia,

I got mine from Amazon.com. It was about $100, but then there was $15 in S&H. It's a little cheaper than your LQS.

Sorry about your computer problems. They are always sooooo frustrating.

Is there more than one LQS in your area you can check with? my DH picked up my copy 2-1/2 years ago at one of the local LQS for $110.... =20

I can second PlanetPatchwork. Nice package deals on EQ books too, and fast service.

Hmmm..

Followed the link you posted, and I did not see that disclaimer.

To add to the confusion, I found THIS on the website Its simple, we will match anyone's reasonable low price. NOTE: When our promotional product pricing includes "free shipping" we must include the other source's shipping fee in the price matching.

We are dedicated to offering you the best prices on the Internet and if by the slimmest chance you find a better price out there, let us know where, and we will see if we can match it using the criteria listed in the previous paragraph. We do not think it will be very likely as we try hard to keep up with the Jones :>
