fabric softener ad

I saw an ad on TV this morning. it says if you buy this softener they will donate to making thousands of "handmade" quilts for hospitalized children.

My question is: Who's making the quilts.

This is the first I've heard of this project.

Downy? I am making some of the quilts.

I received 4 kits that I'm working on and made 4 more from my stash.

All I know is what I read on the web :-) This is a Downy Fabric Softener project called Downy Touch of Comfort. According to their FAQ, Downy helps to provide materials that are used to make quilts by the Quilts for Kids organization. That site looks legitimate to me QuiltsforKids.org

I'm making as one as well. Another quilter that I met a few weeks ago while volunteering at our local elementary school gave me a kit for this project. A LQS in Yardley, PA has put together kits along with a label. All I then need to supply is the batting. Then from what I understand, the maker can post their name and the quilt name on a website (not sure if it's Downey's or the organization's) so the recipient can then find the maker of their quilt and tell the maker about themselves and what the quilt means to them. They are lap size, and for this shop at least, a simple 4 patch. I'm diligently working on getting another project out of the way so I can have room to work on this one. Sounds like a nice program. All the quilts go to hospitalized children if I'm not mistaken.

I requested and received a kit from them (Quilts for Kids) - it's a very simple project, and the fabric is already cut for you. It's a 6" square alternating with a four-patch. They provide fabric for a one-inch inner border, a three-inch outer border, and the backing. And it was Timeless Treasures fabric. Mine is really cute - the six-inch square and outer border has a red background with puppies on it, and the fabrics for the four-patch are a black fabric with white paws and a white fabric with black paws. The backing is black with white doggie bones. That one is put together, and I'm working on one from my stash to send back to them when I return the one made from their kit. I'll post pictures eventually!

Howdy!

Machine-quilted only; too bad, their loss. ;-)

It's legit I am sure. I heard about it sometime back and had considered making a quilt from stash accumulated from the baby quilts I've done lately. I agree with Sandy about the nix on handquilting. Their loss. Even though I'm sure it's a durability and washability issue, but IMO mine have held up pretty darn good.

I was so glad to see this....I just signed up to get a kit and will make another stash one to send back with it. Thanks for the info. Donna

Maybe they thought handquilting would take too long?

I just finished putting together the top for one of these kits. What a piece of cake! I must say, the kit was wonderfully done with great fabrics. Mine was short one border strip but I spoke w/the organization and just ran over the the LQS and picked up something appropriate for the outer border. The lady told me they'd love anything made from my stash that I might want to donate as well. I don't really have a 'stash' per se - just bits of extra fabric from various other quilts/projects. She also explained that they also locally hold 'sewing days' on roughly a quarterly basis where they provide all the materials - and I think she said machines as well - to get as many of these quilts done as well. I may just participate in those events. I can't imagine anyone saying they don't have the time to put one of these together. I think it's taken me about 3 hours so far. The only thing left to do is press the backing, sandwich and machine quilt. This will be my first attempt at machine quilting so that may take a bit of time to do but I'm planning on just straight diagonal lines. Shouldn't be too painful. So far I would highly recommend participating with this organization.
