Yippee! A New Gammill

Well I did it! I ordered my Gammill today. I went to see the machine that Marilyn Karper has in OK City and she was so nice. She answered all of my questions and explained a lot about the different features of the machine as well as the extra products that Gammill sells. I ended up placing my order with Marilyn, and I should get my machine in about three weeks. I'm really excited! This will be my first long arm quilting machine.

Hey Karen:

Welcome to the art of long arm machine quilting. The three things you will learn first are: practice, practice, practice.

The second thing you will do is break needles, lots of them. Don't forget to have them teach you how to time your machine. Sounds awful, huh. But it's not. Buy a couple bolts of muslin to practice on. Have you learned what eyelashes are. Don't worry you will and what to do about them. Breathe, don't get discouraged at your first few attempts at quilting, you will get better and better at it. Get out your favoriate CD's to listen to. In a few months we will be hearing of all the wonder quilts you have completed and pictures of your masterpieces. There are several groups for long arm quilters and a long arm university. There are DVD's out there that teach you also if you don't have a teacher close by.

You are entering into many years of fun quilting.

CONGRATS!!!!!

Congratulations! It is very exciting. Kate T. gave you lots of good advice. My advice is, on the day of delivery, remember to breathe! Also, it might be good to have a friend or DH with you. I was too excited to remember all of the information that was being given to me. Next day, it was good to have somebody who could answer the "what did he say" questions :-)

Have fun!

Ok, now I am officially envious! What model did you get? A Pro? I had my eye on those. Did you get one of the pretty colored heads that were being offered recently? I really wanted a red one!

I think it is great that you were able to do this. What sized room will it be going into? I'm asking, of course, because I am in the process of designing a new home and have carte blanche on the size of my sewing room. I would like to start out large enough to one day accommodate a 12' frame. ~~~~~ Laurie G. in CA HobbyQuilter/SuperQuilter

Hi Kate Yep, I'm sure I will have to do a lot of practicing. I wil be able to take some classes from Linda Taylor

so I can learn how to use the machine. I think she is about 3-4 hours away from me. Then after I get aquainted with my machine, I will probably go back and take some more classes to improve my quilting.Maybe I should buy some extra needles so I'll be ready when they break. I am having the machine delivered and set up so I know it will be running correctly right away.I think I will pull out all the yucky fabrics that I wouldn't use otherwise and practice my quilting on them. Yes I'm so excited that I just might forget to breath! DH is going to try to be here when the machine is delivered and set up. I will probably ask another friend to be here too. I's sure I'll be too excited to remember what I am told! Thanks

No, not the pro. I ordered the Classic Plus. And no fancy red machine for me either. It was very hard, but I was able to have some restraint. Actually, I am having it financed and I didn't want to get too much into debt with it. I wanted the payments to be affordable without depending on an income from quilting just yet. I want to be able to do this as a business, but I don't want to be pressured into taking on customers before I feel ready. For now, it will go into the living room. I have two walls that could accomodate the machine and frame. My living room is kind of an odd shape, so it's hard to explain how big the room is. The wall that I will probably put the machine and frame on is about 20 feet. but that includes the space in front of the back door. At the other end of that wall, there is another 6 feet or so of a tiled area that makes up our front entryway. If I use that wall I would be able to walk all the way around the frame without having it block the doors. I saw in a book somewhere that reccomended that you put a machine with a 14 foot frame into a room at least 17.5 feet long. I think that's so you can walk around both ends of the machine. I don't remember what the reccomendations were for a 12 foot frame.

Howdy!

Karen, Linda's quilt studio/home is down here in n.Tx, just north of Dallas. Before you head this way give us a shout and maybe some of the quilters in that area can have a meet-up with you. While you're in this area be sure to stop at The Quilt Asylum in McKinney, next to I-75, the usual route to head down this way from your area.

That sounds like fun. I'll post to the group when I am planning to take the classes. I thik I'm driving DH nuts. I keep measuring the wall and trying out (in my head) different furniture arrangements to accomodate my new quilting machine in my living room. I've been doing exta sewing just to keep my mind busy whilt I wait the three weeks until my machine is delivered.
