Hi everybody! I am a quilter from B..C. and I stumbled upon this site while looking for a pattern for quilts made with a circle and square template. Betty Gall originally did them but I can't find a pattern ANYWHERE!! If anyone can help please do so. I am at my wits end trying to find this and all I come up with are magazine ads for "Charlie" and no patterns. Thanks in advance. Ginny

have this book on my shelf, all in Japanese but the pictures are good. You could do this by picking the size you want your finished square to be. Then draw a circle with the radius half the diagonal of the square, plus a quarter inch all around for seam allowance. Turn under the seam allowance of the circle and baste. (or use light interfacing, right sides together, sew all the way around, cut a little slit in the interfacing, clip the seam, turn RSO and press for an immaculate circle.) Cut squares of fabric and batting. Fold a circle over each square and quilt down the flaps. Whip stitch all the quilted squares together.Welcome to rctq! Roberta in D

Here's one I used:

I think I used 7" circles (cut with an Olfa circle cutter) and 5" squares. I did denim circles and squares cut from t-shirts. Here's a photo of mine.

I have 'Japanese Folded Patchwork' by Mary Clare Clark (its in English) and she uses a similar technique to Julia's. However, she has a freezer paper template the finished circle size, cuts the circle a little larger, gathers round the edges so that the edges fold over the paper - like doing a YoYo or circle for applique. Then she cuts a piece of batting the same size as the square for the middle, and sandwiches it before she turns the circle sides in.

She ends up with lots of individual blocks she just joins together with a slip stitch - backing and quilt all done at the same time.

Some of her circles are two different half circles joined and this gives a seconary pattern on the back
