Would you try a pattern for me?

I have a pattern for a granny square flower that my mother in law gave me, years ago. I do not have a written pattern and I am trying to write it out to share. I am not experienced at pattern writing, and even though this is a very simple motif, I find the written instructions I have come up with kind of confusing. Would someone be kind enough to try it for me, and see if you can follow my instructions. We can email back and forth with any questions, or if you are in the continental US, I will call you, if you'd like. Here goes. Thanks. This is only the flower (center) part of the granny square. If this is understandable, I will give the granny part. Granny Square Flower Chain 5, join with slip stitch in 1st chain to make circle.

Chain 3, * 3 double crochets in circle. Chain 3, turn.

1 double crochet in each of next 2 double crochets and make 1 double crochet in top of turning chain.

Reach around behind the double crochets, and do 1 double crochet into original circle, behind 1st set, so it is actually as if it was done 1st.

Repeat from * seven times for a total of 8 petals.

I would ike to try it, but not tonight. I will leave this message here and try it tomorrow. Right now, it seems confusing, but I am tired.

OK, I've tried your pattern, and I have some problems with the instructions.

So far, so good. Note that you have now a group of four double crochets about the original four double crochets (counting the chain 3 as double crochets, as they usually are).

I can't figure out where to put this double crochet. In the first part of the chain that was made, near the slip stitch, or back behind the first petal, into the part of the ring where the first row of the first petal ended? I tried this second place, which makes the petal "cup" like an apple blossom petal.

OK, now I'm not sure where I'm supposed to begin the second petal. If I work it after the first petal, when I turn to do the second row of double crochet, I end up smack against the first petal, with no way to get beyond that to make the third petal. The first petal faces one direction, the second petal faces the other way. Was I supposed to turn somewhere?

Also, if I repeat starting with the *, I would only make three double crochets into the ring for the second petal, and I think I need to make four, to make the second petal the same size as the first.

I hope this helps. I couldn't get beyond the second petal, and it doesn't really look right as far as I got.

Barbara, you and I must read and crochet *alike*, as your answer mirrors what I was just going to tell them regarding this GS flower.... Noreen

I have a feeling most crocheters would have the same problems, which is why it was a good idea to ask someone to try it.
