groups to give quilts to for children in need

Hello!

I usually give my quilts to Linus, but in my area no coordinator is answering phone calls or email, and I am more than a little disgusted.

There must be other national groups that do this; would anyone know of any?

I could just call the local hospital, but I'd like the definition of "in need" to spread beyond hospital walls.

TIA!

The obvious place that needs them now is Gaza, with tens of thousands of people bombed out of their homes in the middle of winter and hundreds bombed out of their hospital beds.

Check with you local fire dept. or woman's shelter. I have given quilts to our local woman's shelter and they were sooooo blessed by having a quilt of their own. I know some fire depts. and police carry some for just in case type of things involving kids. I wish more of them could do that. Oh, and thanks for you answer about leaving the Mac on. :)

Our Guild gives quilts to a Women's Homeless shelter too. Their director explained that when the Mom is filling out all the necessary paperwork to be admitted, they let the children pick out a quilt. It provides a little comfort to them during a time of great stress and turmoil. Last year we gave them almost 75 quilts!

Local guild here give a lot of kids quilts to CPS (child protective services) One of our members is an emergency drop in foster mom and has seen the kids come in with quilts. It is nice to see them be used. Often kids are pulled from their homes and have nothing but the clothes on their backs.

I think it is Paul Newman charity that has the camps for handicap kids (I want to say hole in the wall) One local guild has done quilts for the local camp on request. Woman's shelters, hospice, chemo offices, men's rehab are also places I have seen guilds donate. I have a sis that works in a hospital and gave a few to her to donate last fall. There is no shortage of need if you start looking around locally. TAria

Martha, I give quilts to the Red Cross in my little town. That way they have bright, sweet and soft quilts for the little ones when houses burn down or other disaster strikes. I also give some to the local agency that deals with foster children. They like each child to have a special quilt that goes with him or her, no matter what house they live in. I'm trying to figure out a good way for the child's name to be added to the quilt so that it seems personalized. I always sign with "Made with love by Sunny just for YOU."

Even police departments like to have quilts and blankies and soft teddy bears. They deal with kids in the middle of crisis.

It's not hard to think of what child might need a quilt. Just turn on the news.

Hugs and thanks for doing God's work, Sunny

Our guild members make quilts for the neonatal unit at one of the suburban hospitals. They can use every quilt given, and then some. The use does go beyond the hospital wall, b/c the families quilts go home with the babies.

They provide quilts to children on the Pine Ridge Indian reservation, among other places.

You could check your local hospitals that have cancer centers. When I go in for my chemotherapy treatments, the room is usually very cold. The center has some blankets and a very few quilts for us to use while sitting there. The quilts are chosen pretty quickly as you might imagine. They provide cheer and something for us to talk about :-) It has just dawned on me that there are no children's' quilts there although there are children receiving treatment. I had better fix that!

I notice that Taria mentioned the Hole In The Wall Gang camps; there are a number of affiliated camps, of which Victory Junction is one. I know that they need quilts; I'm not sure about the others, but you can navigate through their site to any of the other camps.

is the pagespecifically about the stuffed animals and quilts. Note that they are in process of breaking ground for a second VJGC in Kansas now, and so the need will increase.

Along w/ our very active Project Linus, our guild supports the Ronald McDonald House by donating quilts every year.

Thanks, everyone, for some very good suggestions!

I'll probably go the shelter or chemo room route.

Martha: There is an organization similar to the Ronald McDonald Houses called Fisher House. These facilities serve military hospitals and Veterans' Admin Hospitals. Go to
