HELP!!!!!!!

I have a basic Kenmore machine that I've had since 1990. I was working on some stuff tonight sewing like a jack rabbit and just all of a sudden the machine slowed down to a turtle's pace. Now don't get me wrong, I like turtles but not right now.

Any ideas what could have caused this major slow down? When I try to move the knob/handle towards me, it is very hard to move but when I lock it up to wind a bobbin it moves quickly like it's supposed to.

Of course I am one who does not have a back up machine. Never needed one until NOW!!!!!!!.

TIA for any ideas, suggestions, etc.

if all else fails, there is a yahoo group that might be useful.

is the blurb on their home page. If you like fixing sewing machines as much as you do collecting them, or if you want to swap tips, tricks, and maybe parts, this is the group for you. If you're puzzled about what's wrong with your machine, and want to ask someone who might know, this is a good place to look. There have always been shade tree mechanics, usually automobile hobbyists who like to repair their own cars. This is a place for sewing machine shade tree mechanics. You know who you are. If you've ever been around a group of shade tree mechanics, you'll recall hearing all sorts of discussions as they wrenched on their current projects. Be prepared to see a lot of different topics discussed in here. NO SPAMMERS ALLOWED!!

I'm thnking either the belt got a tad looser, or perhaps the clutch wheel (what you move or unscrew, depending on the mahcine, to wind a bobbin and disengage the needle bar) may have gotten a tad engaged - make sure it is in the non-winding position.
