Help with size

Ok making another denim quilt. Only this one I want to do an eight pointed star in the middle. I'm good with the pattern. Except what size do I make the squares that I am going to cut in half to make the points? The squares all around are 6.5", ending up 6" when sewn. Would I add .5" for the triangles? It sounds right to me but I want to be sure. So if I cut a 7" square, cut that in half and sewed to halves together it would make a 6.5 square before being added to the rest. Sometimes I think I'm speaking a different language so I hope someone can follow what I'm trying to say. Thanx Joanna remove quilt to reply

tho i'm not sure i follow your thinking... when you sew straight lines as in sqs and rectangles, you add 1/2" for seams. when you sew diagonal/triangles you have to add an extra 3/8" so a total

7/8" when you cut the starting squares. now if you can follow that with regard to what you're doing... :)

As Jeanne is probably still asleep, I'll just reinforce her statement! It is important. I would draw out a 7" square on fabric, as a test for yourself, cut it in half and join the halves with a quarter inch seam. You will see then what happens. It is all to do with the angles - but we don't need to go there! . In message , Joanna writes
