Thanks for the link!

I love squared illusions! Would love to see it closer up to see how it's made.

Well, I'm going to be a stinker/party pooper and say I'm disappointed. I don't care for Hollis Chatelain's work- a very, very talented artist but no...... I think that 'quilt' is more a painting than a quilt- and the quilting is far secondary to the painted 'picture' on the fabric quilt top. I would be much more impressed if it was applique rather than painted. Sorry. I guess I'm just an ol' grump. And, no, I am not against some painted areas on a quilt (that is not meant for use on a bed) for the purpose of enhancing the quilt, but when the whole thing is painted and then quilted? Nope. Sorry..... that painting belongs on a canvas with a wood frame around. IMO

Puttin' on my asbestos undies and running like heck!

I hadn't noticed that ... it's not quilting as I know it. Now this one is:

It is totally amazing. I have no idea (totally clueless) as to how it was made, but gosh, it's amazing. I guess I'm a simpleton. To me, quilting means using lots of bits of fabric to create something... adding embellishments is one thing entirely different (at least in my mind) to painting.

J, opinionated tonight.

Picture do not even begin to do justice to Hollis Chatelain's quilts. She had a quilt exhibited the year I went to the Houston show. I walked back by it several times it was so striking. There is a lot of quilting in her quilts - as I said pictures don't do her quilts justice!

I saw one of her quilts up close too. There is just no way a photo will even begin to do them justice. They're simply stunning. Most of the "paint" is thread.

I knew this year's winner was her work before I saw the name!

And what would you say if you knew the "paint" was mostly thread?? Applique is easy compared to what she does.

No, you're not alone Leslie. I'm afraid I thought the same. But, I recognise that I am now years behind in my 'taste' and even in judgement of what constitutes a 'fantastic prize-winning quilt'. First and third of the miniatures were also in the top three of the Paducah list. (I can't remember about the second). . In message , Leslie & The Furbabies in MO. writes

That one certainly is fantastic, Janice. I loved it, too. Those sweeping strands of Flying Geese are so graceful. . In message , janice142 writes

Hey Leslie

I'm with you when it comes to the fabric artist quilts. The change to painted quilts started at IQA in the early 90's. I also don't care for them. I have opted for local quilt shows over the BIG ones. The first year they changed the layout at the convention center, they put up a display of painted quilts with black backgrounds and signs that said no photos. The display included a tennis shoe, a squirrel, bear, etc. I went for a quilt show but instead found painted fabric and vendors as the main theme.

If I'm not mistaken that was the year a fella, mad at an unhappy customer, threw bleach on her quilt and several others near by.

You got an extra flame resistent suit, think I will be one.

That's probably me as well Patti... I know I feel out of touch more often than not. I'm not "modern" or sophisticated enough I suppose, and at this stage, I'm not changing. Though I appreciate the piecework (paper piecing perhaps?) in that Twilight quilt mentioned above, truth to tell, I can't see me ever producing something like it.

The few I have completed are meant to be used. And gosh, those geese would be dead ducks by the time I attempted insanity (er, cutting/ stitching them)

I will confess to liking some of the picture quilts (appliqued ones)

-- saw once many decades ago a painting on the wall... I honestly thought it was painted with oils, but it turned out that the piece was made of inlaid marble pieces. It was gorgeous mind you... End random meandering of this response.

It's probably the way I was raised, i.e. the use it up, don't throw it away bit. New England mentality -- and I still do. Didn't understand when I was the Kidlet's age, but now if the clothes are too awful to wear any more, I remove buttons and cut up -- either for quilt fabric potential or as rags.

Seriously, folks BUY (spend perfectly good fabric money) on paper towels. I use old tee-shirts and clothing, and can spend what I have on fun stuff such as quilting goodies, paint brushes, and, well, silk floss -- not disposables.

Such is life in Pensacola.... Did you notice? NO HURRICANES here. Celebrating tonight for certain. There's a lot to be thankful for this year. Life is good. :)

Whoo hoo! A local woman and a friend of mine, Susan Stewart, won 1st place for machine embroidery.

Even though the quilt looks pieced, it's all white fabric, can you imagine??

Very cool. You miss so much detail with photos. Too bad we all can't see them all in person.

Why are people so impressed with whole cloth quilts and so down painted quilts and "cheater panels"? That the paint on Hollis' quilt is mostly thread is really a Wow! for me, but if an art quilt is more art than quilt I don't see how that makes it a bad quilt.

Jane in NE Ohio. We are having our first snow of the season, cold & slushy.

----------------------------------------------------- There was lots of excellent quilting, but I thought the quilting was there to accent the motif, not to supply the motif. >

And what would you say if you knew the "paint" was mostly thread?? Applique is easy compared to what she does.
