Leslie, in part I agree with you. But remember that this is also a `whole cloth quilt, and a lot of the detail work is done in thread while quilting the layers together, not paint. But there does seem to be a tendency for "art" quilts to out shine the pieced/appliquéd/traditional styles of quilts in the big prizes. I think there is a place for all of them, but perhaps there needs to be some separation at some point. Not sure what the best way to go is.
All of the winning quilts, and many of the others on display are outstanding examples of the art of quilting/piecing/appliqué.
