How Do They Do It? (not OT)

I've just been looking at the website and blog of Ferrett, the awesome award winning quilter from the UK. I LOVE her quilt "Herd Mentality". She's 40 yrs old and said she started quilting in 2002, had made her own clothing before that. So, within 8 yrs, she becomes a cutting edge, fabulous quilter, writes books, designs patterns, and does long arm quilting too. Is this some kind of supernatural gift that only a few are born with? I've been sewing all my life and still make more messes than not. Where does this come from? I guess some's got it and some ain't. Michelle

These quilts are amazing !! I wish I could draw like that ...the series of nudes and the"star" quilts are what I dream of having the ability to create

OMG, my DH went to Uni with her. You should have seen the looks on people's faces when they called out her name for her degree in the middle of Canterbury Cathedral! Memorable.

I remember her as a very strange girl, which is probably why she had her name changed to Ferret - which was her nickname at the time. I just looked at her website and she hasn't changed a bit to look at.

If only I had known at the time that we were both interested in quilting.....maybe she could have given me some tips!!!

Just here thinking, that maybe "strange" was not the right way to describe her, seems mean of mean.

I suppose that she was already looking at the world differently from me, which is probably why she is so successful with her quilting and her take on it.

Mind you, I am remembering how she was 20 years ago and I haven't had any contact with her since. We're all different people since then, I know that I certainly am!

Where is my head? I meant to say kind of mean NOT mean of mean!

Let me start again - "strange" was not the right way to describe her, seems kind of mean. She probably thought that I was strange as well! I think that I was back then, so many years ago!

BTW where did that 20 years go?

Yes, I appreciate her work, not what I do myself, but inspiring, none the less.

My excuse is that the tax forms arrived today, so my head is going around in circles! Not only is it in French, but I'm sure that the paperwork that I cannot currently find is looking right at me!

She is something, isn't she? I love her work and admire the talent she has for envisioning a piece of art and being able to create it. I think I have the envisioning part down - it's just the creating part that gets in the way and is less than effective! Somehow, getting the idea from my brain to fabric just doesn't work. But I still do pretty good with traditional-style quilts, so I'll just stick with those.

Along with the talent she probably spends a lot more time at quilting than average. I recently read Outliers (by Malcolm Gladwell) and the main point that I took away from that book was the 10,000 hour rule - it takes at least 10,000 hours to become really really good at something.

I can see that on a small scale with my machine quilting: I saved my very first MQ class samples - so when I get discouraged I can see that I have improved a lot, even though I still have a way to go :)

I liked looking at Ferrett's portfolio of her quilts from her web page,

Her oldest ones are designs that any of us could do and then she develops into some amazing designs that are truly artistic.
