How Much Does a Featherweight Weigh? (a bit OT)

Well, the decision has been made for Mom to move from her home in Louisville to an Assisted Living facility in Paducah, where my brother and his family live. (Hey, if a quilter has to move, Paducah is a great place, right? And if a quilter's quilting daughter has to visit, Paducah is okay!) Anyway, she's giving me her featherweight machine. I understand the name implies that they are well-nigh weightless, but how much does one weigh? Can I carry it on to an airplane? Will it fit under the seat or in the over head compartment? (Can't afford to buy it a ticket!)

I took one once -it fit in the overhead bin in its case, with the whole thing wrapped in a couple layers of bubble wrap. Had to send it through the security Xray twice, they had trouble identifying it first time through. My advice: leave off the bubble wrap in case you need to open it, but do put it in some kind of sturdy bag to protect the case from scratches. Don't know if you'll have trouble with the weight. The machine by itself is 11 pounds. Maybe pack the accessories in your check-in luggage? Roberta in D

They weigh about 15 pounds in their regular case. When DH brought me his mom's FW, he just put it into his duffle bag and put the whole thing in the overhead compartment. Fortunately, there was no damage, since he hadn't thought to pad the machine at all.

Pat, you reminded me: I learned to put a scrap of fleece or bubble-wrap at the end of my FW before I fold it up for storage. Only after I got scratches on the finish, however. I also learned to keep the thread-cutter turned to the back instead of the end, for the same reason.

Thank you all for your hints. I've never really paid close attention to Mom's FW, so we'll have some getting acquainted to do!
