Hunting red and pin bites

I think maybe I can do two topics at once. If you are hunting a glorious pure red for a holiday project, take a look at Moda Marbles Christmas Red. It doesn't lean toward orange or blue, just a wonderful Christmas red - and it's been around so long it's on sale at several places. I just used my last bit and realized that the other reds in the bin were gorgeous but not quite what I think of as Ho ho Red. And, I read somewhere recently and saw someone on Simply Quilts propounding the thought that it does matter how big a bite you take with your pin when you are matching points. I had imagined that doing a thorough 'in, out, in and out again' pinning was seriously pinning. Wrong. The trick is to take the tiniest pin bite you can. If you leave an amount between in and out - that's how much wiggle you are allowing your points to skew. Squew? Something. I just had to try the Carpenter's Wheel and it is so perfectly pointed I can hardly stand it. Warm best wishes from the gators and me. Polly

poifect points on a carpenters wheel?? holy smokes, where do we see this beauty. one of those blocks i wont be doing soon with all those points. i know what you mean by smallest bite with the pins. watch that happen often on SQ. i always figure the bigger the bite, the more likely to lay flat, oops, shame on me. i dont pin a lot tho, not with regular piecing. i usually hope if i can nest the seams right i'll get decent points. maybe i need to pin more and i'll get better than decent, i'll get poifect one. hmmmmmm. which reminds me, i saw Judy Dales on SQ today, love her curved quilts. i dont need a 'ho ho red' but i'll have a look anyhow, lol. ok, maybe i'll find one i like enough even if i dont need it, lol. thanks P. jeanne

Well, honestly, I only made one Carpenter's Wheel but it is truly perfect. A bit serious for a crib quilt, I thought, so naturally I bordered it with first some crabs and then some polka dots. Baby won't care if the points are perfect or not but how sweet it is to have finally discovered how to take the wiggle slip/slide out of point matching. Polly

Thanks for the valuable tip. Pinning correctly is something I still struggle with.

If you want to rid yourself of the Carpenter's Wheel block, you can send it to me! I'm here to help when I can.
