I did it!

I bought a new serger -- a Babylock Eclipse DX. My old Elnalock was almost 20 years old. I haven't used it a lot in recent years because I haven't been doing much garment sewing. But it seemed like every time I made something with it, the timing went bad and it had to go in for repairs. I finally had had it. Today I took it in, but decided to look at new ones before I had it repaired. I thought about it -- for a couple hours -- then went back to get it. I want to finish the binding on 3 baby quilts before I try it, but that gives me some motivation.

Good for you, Julia. Here's hoping you'll have lots of years of happy serging with the new one. Do you really just HAVE to bind the baby quilts before you can see what wonderful stuff your new serger can do? I have an old Bernina serger here (also about 20) that does beautiful serging but she is an absolute beast to thread. Sure is wonderful to have one that serges and doesn't want to argue about it. Enjoy your new treasure. Polly

There should be no threading hassles with this one -- it's got "jet air" automatic threading for the loopers and a needle threader for the needles. They told me that Babylocks are very unlikely to have the timing go bad. It looks like this machine has some nice features besides the easy threading, like a stitch width adjuster and tension release when you lift the presser foot -- and probably others yet to be discovered.

And yes, I do want to get those quilts bound. I have had my sewing machine in the dining room for a couple weeks while I got them quilted; I need to get the sewing machine back to the sewing room so we're not sharing the dinner table with sewing stuff all the time. Besides, telling myself I have to get those done first gives me some incentive to get them done. I have the binding sewn to the front, and I've glued the corners down in the back. Now I'll just stitch in the ditch to catch the back edge of the binding. Won't take long once I get at it.
