Can you make a quilt about 17" square? A burial quilt for a wee one who was born too soon? Our group needs about 100 fetal demise blankets. This state holds the very painful record for the most premature births/deaths in our nation. It is a tough call. Making a quilt for a burial is surely heart-wrenching unless you know that you are wrapping a little angel that never breathed and deserves better than being wrapped in paper. The quilts need to be white, cream, pink or blue - something gentle and not cheerful. Just two squares with a thin batting - binding is not expected, birthing is fine. Quilting is not expected either, just tying in

6 or 7 random places or a tack stitch on your SM. Join me if you can in hugging the littlest angels. I know you can't do a hundred but I thought I'd ask if some of you could do just one. Polly

Polly I'll be stitching tomorrow and send them on as soon as I can. Who could say no to such a powerful request.

Thank you, Sunny. I would lots rather be playing with the new lime batiks that are just dazzling with the purples here for crib quilts. Lots rather. The limes will keep ( if not quietly). Sometimes we need to snuggle a precious little angel and be just oh so thankful for the little miracles that do live and bless our lives. Polly

Polly, would it be okay to practice some quilting on the 17 in. squares- like meandering/stippling, McTavishing, feathers or some small medallion? Or would that be too much? This might be a good way to do FMQ warm ups before starting on your quilt- if that is acceptable- and produce a tiny quilt at the same time. I'm so sorry these are needed at all.... ever.

I'll get started on some as soon as possible. Do we send them to you?

We hate to refuse any kind offer, Leslie, but sometimes quilting stiffens a quilt (at least a little) and these wee ones need very soft wraps. A bit of lace, ribbon or embroidery is good but stay as gentle as you can. Polly

Sending them to me will be fine. Ever since I won the lottery I've had to be careful about keeping my address secret from the kinfolks and the irs but I'll share it with whoever can make wraps with us. Polly

I've thought of this before, Polly, but wasn't sure how to go about it. To keep me from having to turn on my old computer and digging for it, would you please send your address to me at snipped-for-privacy@cox.net

Thank you for doing this.

I'd love to make a couple, Polly. Do we send them to you?

Sure, Irene. Send them to me. Somebody help me here. The quilt instructions received from Newborns in Need asks that the little quilts be birthed instead of using binding. Some volunteers have not been familiar with 'birthing'. Is there another expression, term, word or something that would be better understood? I can't say 'like you make a pillow' because we don't want anybody stuffing a pillow form in one. Can you help me with better words? Polly

I much never cared for the term 'birthing' for that quilt making process. That word has a very different meaning to me- twice! VBG I always heard it called The Pillow Turn Method. It may not be a common term, either. And a binding would make it stiffer than the pillow turn, so that makes sense as does no real quilting on those little quilts.

I'm so glad you are getting a good response here!

I've heard it called that, too.

with right side of fabric facing each other, sew your seam around the quilt leaving an opening to turn the quilt right side out. Sew opening to close quilt. Binding the quilt is NOT acceptable!

Wouldn't that work?

Polly, what about single layer Minkee or thin fleece with a buttonhole edge? I just think it needs to be soft. And thin. Front and back of flannel? No quilting or even tying necessary. I've made these for summer weight throws for babies. What do you think?

I just made a couple with one layer of thin fleece and a buttonhole edge. They truly are soft and lovely. There's not much fleece here and some of its backside is sort of rough. I reckon I need to do some shopping. Polly

Miz Polly please e me Butterfly-Wings ((((( at q.com))))

Would it be possible to put the three layers together, perhaps tie or spot sew in a few places and then satin stitch all around? That would not then even have the lumpy edge of the inside seam? . In message , Polly Esther writes
