You can cut it into squares and use an attic window to set the squares. It would look like you are peering thru window panes looking at the race cars. And it wouldn't need to be fussy cut to do that.

Hi,
I am making a baby quilt for my sister's new baby :) A cute little boy. Anyhow, the dad picked out the fabric (yikes lol) and I just dont know where to go with it. I have two yards of this
Carissa
How complicated do you want the pattern to be?
I think appliquing circles (using the Formula fabric) onto a background would be pretty cool ... but I don't think it would use up much of the fabric he bought, though.
I thought of the circles because seeing that fabric made me think of wheels ...

I like Leslie's idea of attic windows. It would look terrific. You could make 6 or 8 inch 'windows' using say red and black surround, repeated in a border/binding. Whatever. make sure you post the result :)

Well I have made the attic window before, I think I could do that again.... it would work. Or I could make the race track, and disguide all the flaws cause I suck at applique lol by turning the track into an attic window. That might be fun..... Thank you all for the thoughts... I do like attic windows. It might work. I will keep thinking, and I will definatly post the result Thank you
Carissa
How about Warm Wishes? You could fussy cut the race cars and use primary colors for the other blocks.
Sunny who loves Warm Wishes
hmmmm I think I made that pattern before as well... That might work. I wonder what it would look like with a checkboard border, or checkerboard inbetween blocks and primary colors in the boarder ( I am thinking checkered flag/checkerboard) cool... my mind is begining to like this fabric lol

I would just cut squares taking in as much of the cars as possible not worrying if each square had full cars or part cars - you can see the theme - that's okay ... then I'd do other blocks log cabin style picking the colours for these blocks from the colours in the cars - not babyish, but boyish for quite a few years. I did this a couple of years ago for a little girl - it had an adorable elephant print.

log cabin is fav block to make, and I never even thought to do that.... thank you

Well, Carissa, I did close down the thread, because I didn't think my only idea was very sensible! but then I decided I might as well tell you - just in case >gg< I see you alluded to the same thought.
As soon as I saw the fabric, I knew I would use it as the backing!
Then I would get another racing car fabric which was easier to cut up and use in a pattern. You could then do the pattern similar to the little girl's.
This would then give you a reversible quilt, as I'm not suggesting the fabric be 'relegated' to the back, but made a feature of. .

I like Sunny's idea of using the Warm Wishes pattern. You could make the alternate blocks in bright colours, chosen from the race car fabric, then do a checkerboard pattern in black and white for the border.
Yikes indeed! I agree, it would make a great busy backing. Maybe you could find some paper-pieced cars, or maybe a sort of coordinating car print on a smaller scale. Roberta in D

I know what I want to say but I can't describe it any better than this: You are doing an "attic window pattern in essence" altho you will NOT have lines every 6" apart.
Lay your fabric down, lay 2(1/2") strips down from top to bottom and side to side......move them around some to where you are not blocking certain cars......then mark in the middle of each where the strips are.. which will be your cutting line.. You may have an "odd looking attic window" as each 'square' is not the same size as the next--- the main 'lines' (window divider lines on a normal window) do not have to be 6" apart. One square may be 20", another 6", another 4", etc
Maybe it's called Shadow Box? I saw a quilt of it and when you stood back a ways the lines 'disappeared'. It was quite fetching.
This way you are not losing anymore than the 1/4" seams of the whole piece of cloth.
Hope this makes sense

I like Leslie's idea! And the bottom sashing could be all the same color (black?), with the side sashings in various other colors -- red, blue, yellow, green -- to go with what's in the formula fabric.
Another suggestion would be to cut squares (6", maybe?) and just alternate them with plain squares in red, blue, yellow, green. Fast and easy.
Thank you all for the help in this... I am taking a trip to the fabric store on monday, and I write my last final on wednesday so by weeks end perhaps I will have something to show for all your sage advice. I especially appreciate everyone who agreed with me about using it for the back lol I was feeling a tad guilty, but I know now I am not alone in my feelings ;) I have some ideas now and I believe I can work with it on some level... The trip to the fabric store shall finalize my plans (or my insanity lol) Thanks again
Carissa
Howdy!
Ooo--I like that idea, Sharon. Carissa: ignore the car/design placement on the fabric. Cut into strips or blocks, use those w/ the most car for the plain blocks, have fun w/ the alternating blocks. LogCabin is so easy, too. Good luck! R/Sandy
