Black and White pictures for memory quilt

I am going to try to make a memory quilt for my mom for Christmas. The pictures will be old and in black and white. Should I print them onto the material in grayscale or black and white? Or does it matter?

Thanks.

Helen

Almost certainly greyscale - you lose most of the detail using black and white unless the original *was* black and white (like a woodcut).

Try a few samples on the fabric you will actually be using. It can be very hard to predict what will happen.

I do a lot of vintage photo restoration and repairing, using Adobe Photoshop. Some of these photos are over 100 yrs old. Printing black and white can be really tricky and usually a sepia tone looks better. If I can help, just let me know. Michelle

These will be old scanned photos that are black and white.

I second Michelle ... sepia will not only look better and more ... antique-y and "rich" .... but also has a better chance of lasting (since you'd be using more than simply black ink to print).

May I ask what kind of printer you'd be using? If you can, find a friend or local shop that uses Epson inks for output. Epson inks are more archival quality than most and will last much, much longer. Especially when it comes to UV exposure.

I have a LexMark, Epson, and an HP (won't buy Canons - I have a grudge against them for crappy tech support and quality), all new at the time I did my "experiment".... about 2 years ago, I printed "bumper stickers" using the same substrate on each and placed them in a window of one vehicle. 2 months later, the HP's ink was faded beyond recognition. 6 months later, the LexMark's ink was gone. The Epson's ink is still as vibrant as the day I printed it. And considering that I live in FL, and have high UV exposure, that's sayin' a LOT!!! :)

HTH!! Connie :)
