I've ruined my new iron

I know there's already a "cleaning iron" post going around, but this is different. I was doing applique with WU and other similar sticky stuff. I was very, very careful but ...you know the drill. I got some of the sticky on my new iron (stainless bottom, not teflon). My husband went to iron a shirt, saw the stuff and took steel wool to the bottom of my iron. There are a few little scrapes. And now I got it sticky again in the same place and can't get the stuff to come off. I paid $40 for this iron expecting it to last a while. Grrrrrrrrrr. Any suggestions on getting off the sticky? And is the bottom now permanently ruined from the steel wool? And what can I do with this t hing to keep the bottom clean because it seems to be constantly in a sorry state.

Wrinkledly, Sunny

Iron off will hopefully help with the sticky....

Then, see if you can find one of those "add a plate" or whatever they are called things where you put on a second bottom/base to your iron...

If you use sandpaper use like 2000 grit, you can usually find it in automotive sections of department stores, most 'home improovment' stores will not have this fine grit, it'll be smooth as a babys bottom.

I do this ALL the time. I used a tube of iron cleaner which can be used while the iron is hot. If you must use an abrasive, make it fine steel wool.

I absolutely would Not mess with a husband who would iron his own shirts. Mercy no. For sure, you can get your new iron clean. Meanwhile, how about buying a cheap iron for your gummy projects? . . . or at least use a pressing sheet even if it's only a hunk of muslin. Husbands who will iron or cook should be cherished. Polly
