invisible hand applique

Hello everybody

Please excuse my English... English is not my first language. I do speak Spanish.

I am trying to make my first bed cover, for my daugther's bed. I fall in love with the sunbonnets... I want to make it with a technique called "invisible hand applique" I don't have a clue of how to do it. I have downloaded a lot of information from internet, but still not sure about how to make it.

Is there anyone here who want to help me?

thanks very much.... Sandy... (uk)

Welcome Sandy! Your technique is also called "needleturn applique". It takes practice! But keep with it, the results will be lovely. If you have a quilt fabric store nearby, ask if someone can show you how or recommend a class. Roberta in D

Sandy, the Sunbonnet quilts are loved by many and you will enjoy creating the little pictures. I am worried that invisible hand applique needs many hours and fine skills. If you are a beginner, why don't you make just one block for a pillow top? If you enjoy the making of it, then you can go on to a bedsize quilt. My own Sunbonnet quilt is appliqued with sewing machine embroidery stitches with some embroidery by hand. It is a sweet and happy quilt and was facile. (I think that is the Spanish word for easy. I can conjugate verbs in Spanish but have not found it to be a useful skill.) Polly

Welcome and bienvenido (my Spanish is much worse than your English!), from one Sandy to another! I'm not great on hand appliqué, so I'm afraid I can't give you any advice, but I do think that what Polly said is probably something you should consider.

Hi Roberta...

Thanks very much for answering my message. I found just ONE shop of patchwork in the city where I live. They are very nice ladyes there... But they are too busy, the owner of the shop has her daugther very ill... and she explain me but very superficial. Sometimes I am intelligent...sometimes I am a perfect idiot. anyways...

I will do it... I know I can I just need someone to showme how to start that is it.

Hi Sandy, I have done applique on the machine and by hand. I think maybe Swindon is a little too far to come and help! I hope there is maybe a group near you that will be able to demonstrate Sun Bonnet Sue! Maybe someone is reading this a little nearer.I have a picture of SBS on a cushion. It should be in my photos .Click on the link to signature.

Hi Sandy , If you can get out to Wootton Bassett (the buses x55 or x54 go there from Swindon) there is a very good fabric shop there where the ladies do patchwork and are very helpful. Jan

Sandy,

I have a couple more suggestions:

- Check your local library to see if they have any hand applique books or whether they can get one for you.

- Take a class online at

I don'tthink they have the class that you want coming up soon, but you couldcheck with them as to when one would be available. Bev in TX

If you need to see someone actually do hand applique, look for a video. Your library may have one or be able to get one for you.

Yes, Quilt University is a good idea. Although you live in the UK< you can still join up is you want to. You pay by credit card, so they take care of the currency exchange. The courses are *very* reasonable (and the exchange rate is good for us at the moment). Have a look at the available classes - just look up the website. The way they organise the classes is good - there is lots of contact with the tutor and other students via the online connection. . In message , " snipped-for-privacy@yahoo.com" writes

Or you can purchase a DVD - I know Piece o'cake has one.

If you just want to understand needleturn, hawaiian applique uses that technique (though you won't learn about preparing pieces and such just the stitch itself)
