Gabrielle Swain has instructional DVDs/videos available too. I have Gabrielle Swain's DVD on applique (good content but poor quality sound/video!)

My favourite "teaching/learning" books for hand applique would be -
Jane Townswick's "Applique Takes Wing" and "Artful Applique The Easy Way" (great books on techniques and lovely designs)
Liuxin Newman's "Perfect Hand Applique with Thimblelady" (detailed instructions and lists of tools and materials, and comes with a DVD)
Nancy Pearson's "Floral Applique" (Not a lot of instruction but some good tips and gorgeous eye candy)
Perhaps you could ask your library to get them in for you.
