Judo quilt

My judo instructor's wife is expecting in the next few weeks. The quilt I am making can be seen here:

I think Ihave it shared out properly. I am wondering what to use for the binding, The other pictures (judo possibility n) are possibilities for the binding to go around it. I do not have enough of the other colors in the quilt (the solids and the other 2 plaids) to make the binding, in fact I don't think I have any of most of them.

I also include as a possibility using white material for the binding. I did not bother including a picture of it, but the reason I include this as a possibility is because the white material that I have in my stash is much heavier and durable than any of the possibilities pictured. It is the weight that you would use to make a karate gi, in fact, that is what I used it for.

Long time no see Brian! I think I would opt for option 4 - the dark blue with spots/stars (?). I think it is more of a 'drawing together' fabric than the checks would be. Don't quite know how to express that feeling >g< . In message , Brian Christiansen writes

Yep, I agree Patti.

It is hard to tell how bright the Madras checks are but the dark blue should look good either way. Lovely quilt. I love Madras checks!

I definitely would not do a white binding on a child's quilt. It will look white now -- but forever after the child has it ... it will look gray. Kiddos suck on it and drag it and the binding will get most of the dirt.

I also opt for a dark blue. I think it will frame our your quilt beautifully.

Love those plaids. IMO the dark blue for the binding! Roberta in D

I agree with the others. The dark blue will be lovely and will give the eye a little resting place after the busier plaids. :)

Howdy!

Brian, welcome back!

What a lively quilt!

Because I like a dark binding (it makes the quilt say "I stopped here, and I meant to stop here!") I'd go w/ that blue fabric. And I like the idea of black & blue together on the quilt... kind of a judo instructor's history... well, I think so, anyway.

There's nothing wrong w/ mixing the fabrics you have for the binding; it would reflect the body of the quilt; the plaids definitely say "Young!" "Baby" "Fun!" But I'd choose the blue. ;-) (and would stay away from the gi fabric, too heavy, too white)

Good luck. And please let us know what you decide.

I think the white might be too heavy for the binding. I would use the black or the blue for binding. Either would set off the quilt nicely. I think the plaids might be a little busy for the binding. Remember, that is my opinion, yours and others may vary.

Nice quilt, Pati, > My judo instructor's wife is expecting in the next few weeks. The quilt I am
