Long Beach Quilt Show

Went to the opening day of the LB Quilt Show today. Unfortunately, in the beginning it was not very well organized. We had to stand in line for about an hour before we could get tickets because they did not have enough ticket booths opened. When they finally got the booths opened, they did not control the lines and those who came after the new lines opened were not sent to the back of the line and cut in until tempers started to rise. Finally, they got people out there to keep things organized only to run out of tickets for the day.

Finally got in before they ran out of tickets. There were people and people and people for as far as the eye could see. Over 500 vendors. I got a Fab-U-Motion and a new ruler that has a guide to keep your strips even and cut faster-- we will see how they work out.

The quilts were amazing. The Last Supper was there. It is truly an amazing work of art. I have seen it on the internet in the past, but online does no justice for this quilt at all.

I see why people say to plan to attend at least 2 of the days. We were exhausted by the time we got back to the car, we left dragging. I would have loved ot spend more time looking at the quilts.

All in all a very wonderful day!

I figure to leave the house here within the hour. I checked the directions down, and have no clue which parking structure to use. Right now I am off daily multi-vitamins, but will take my B Complex. And take some water and snacks, it sounds like. Can't spend 2 days there, will see as much as I can. Can't guaranteee any pictures.

Thanks for the report, Debbie!

Sorry there will not be anyone else from rctq there today when I go ;(

If you go back tomorrow, look for The Quilter's Inn - vendor. That is my LQS in Danville & they have been working their tales off to get ready for this show. I hope it ends up being worth it for them.

Also, if you get around to the Hoffman Challenge section, I would love a picture of my entry.

Pati C I saw your entry, the Grandmother's Flower Garden!!! Unfortunately, I have no pictures of any sort. I do not have a camera, and was hoping a vendor would have a basket of disposables they were selling. There was not a one with cameras like that. Doesn't it make sense someone would try doing that?

There were so many awesome quilts, it was truly overload. Traveling displays like Sense of Space, Hoffman challenge, Journal Quilts.

Vendors as far as your eye could see. My friends Dawn and Patrick from The Creation Station have an island booth and it was hopping right from the opening bell. The aisles were pretty narrow in my opinion, and got blocked quite easily. There were no stroller allowed per what I was told by someone before the opening, but then I did see strollers. And there were many electronic wheelchairs, so the narrow aisles were a real negative.

As Debbie mentioned earlier, there was quite a bit of rumbling around. I was #5 in line waiting for the door to the hall to open. By the time it did, I was #12 due to people ahead of me suddenly seeing their friends and waving them in ;(

It was my first time at the Convention Center there. I'd like to go back to go to the Long Beach Aquarium and all.

Ginger in CA very tired tonight.

Debbi: the aquarium at LB is beautiful. we did that when i was there for Easter. and we took the boat ride around the bay. the aquarium took us about 2 1/2 to 3 hrs to do, and the boat trip was fun, very windy, but worth it. all the quilt shows i've been to all have the same problem. the isles are too narrow. i guess they measure for displays and venders, but forget about the patrons. glad everyone had a good time! wish i could've gone but it's a long drive from here !!

Ami,

It is Ginger who would like to go to the aquarium. I have been there several times, the last time with my little nephew who had such a good time we had a hard time getting him out of there to go home.

We ended up not going back to the show. We were going to get a late start, gas is expensive, we did not want to pay for parking again and pay the price of admission once again. Went off to the LQS and got a great panel, backing and border all for 30% off so now I can make a quilt for the new grandson of a friend of mine-- have never met her daughter or SIL.

Wow! Did they charge admission for each day of the show? A friend of mine & I talked about going down, but I couldn't commit until I knew I was fully recovered from surgery I had a few months ago & then it just got too late to plan. When I go to PIQF in Santa Clara, we pay one admission & that covers us for the entire 4 days. (They don't sell a one-day admission.) I'd be interested in knowing how the Long Beach compares to PIQF if anyone has done both.

Howdy!

The general practice for IQF is to charge a daily fee and a full-show tour; in Houston it's usually $10 per day (full price) and $35 for all 4 days (discount for seniors & students), same for Rosemont. For registered class students the admission to the show is included in the registration price (via badge). As it's such a large show w/ lots of classes, for those of us who just want to spend a day or 2, this pricing works well.

I am surprised that they didn't learn their lesson from the Rosemont show. The first year opening day was just as you described---long lines, not enough ticket booths, etc. The following three years have been much better.

One of the articles I read about the LB show said that the IQF people (Kerry B & co.) set up the shows, telling the facility managers what to expect, including how many people were predicted for the eating area. However, so often the facility directors think they know best, and always underestimate the size needed for the cafeteria/food court. (This happened several times at the big quilt show in Dallas; "they" just don't listen to the "little quilt ladies" and would set aside a corner of the building, and then set aside some time during the next couple of weeks to read all the letters and e-mails fussing about "not enough room for lunch!" Same goes for the ticket booths; the "experts" who have done this before try to prepare for the best crowd flow but the people who run the exhibit space (convention center, community building, etc) don't always listen or pay attention, and seldom do they believe that "just a bunch of quilters" will arrive in great numbers.

Good to hear that your mom is doing well w/ you. Best wishes.

R/Sandy - preparing for tomorrow's before-the-wedding reception, where I hope to have plenty of space, food, and people !! and the cupcake tree ;-P

Happy to hear that your Mom is doing better. Sorry you missed the CA quilt show though. DH and I are thinking of heading to Phoenix in March for their show. We are thinking of travelling to Sedona and the Grand Canyon as well while in AZ. He's making some tentative reservations, so we can decide later. It is also dependant on his Mom's health as well.
