Longish happy jig!

Hi everyone, Picked up my Horn and "Granny's" singer yesterday and set it up. The Singer is a quaint museum piece. It has the option of being hooked up to either "The electric" or a trusty treadle or perchance the hand crank. Heavens, it might be older 'n me! The Singer looks barely used and probably does all it was meant to. i.e. sews a straight stich seam on a bit of fabric. There is even a buttonhole attachemnet that is about as big as my moble (cell) phone. No, bigger.

Anyway, the Janome 6500 fits in the cabinet nicely and the hydraulic lift means I now have a nice big flat area to work on, rather than the dodgy slide on plastic attachment. I now sit in front of the needle instead of to the right. My old sewing cabinet is now housing my overlocker, but there isn't quite enough room to open both out in the cupboard that is supposed to be the 4th bedroom in this rental.

To celebrate this increase in sewing capabilities I have started a couple of cushions (pillows) to give as Christmas presents to my DILs. Using scraps. Only made three quilts. Why do I have so many scraps? And why is it that the fabrics that appeal least to me seem to breed in their plastic box and those I really like, shrink?

Happy Pre-Holiday preparations to you all! Fay

There's nothing quite like a good flat sewing surface! Makes machine quilting so much easier. I have a little Featherweight born the same year I was :-) Makes the most perfect straight stitch, like all old Singers before they invented zigzag. Sounds like you acquired 2 treasures!

"Calloo, Callay, Oh Frabjous Day!" Sounds like you are having a wonderful time with a great new toy. Congrats on starting projects, too!

I agree--ugly fabrics multiply and beautiful ones disappear from the stash. However, those ugly fabrics sometimes are the perfect third or fourth fabric in a quilt!

Mmmmmmmm, my goodness, how lovely. Having a SM down flat in a cabinet must be yummy. As to the truly ugly fabric scraps, you can always send them to Jill for her doggy rescue quilts. Those pups welcome a warm bed and aren't fussy. Polly

Congratulations, Fay! It must be wonderful to have a nice sewing cabinet! :) I'm anxiously awaiting mine, which I hope to have before Christmas, but you never know. I've been waiting and saving up for about ten years for this, so I'm pretty excited -- both for you and for me! :)

Hey Fay,

Congrats on your new, old Singer! ;-) Sounds like you're really getting organized.

Your DILs are going to love those scrappy pillows. Imho, there's no such thing as an ugly piece of fabric--you just haven't found the right place for it yet. ;-) I love incorporating those lil scraps.
