Mentor Teacher's Quilt

I did my student teaching at a preschool this spring. My mentor teacher was fantastic so I decided to make her a quilt as a thank you. I made a photo quilt and made sure that all of the children appeared in at least

2 of the pictures. The director gave me the name of the company where the kids starting in kindergarten get their uniforms. I talked to the uniform people to find out the cost of the fabric. They liked my idea so much that they sent me the fabric for free! i did all of the sashings between the pictures with the school's plaid. I even had enough to use as the backing.

I will say, the fabric was a total PITA to work with. Shredding is putting it mildly.

I presented the quilt on Tuesday which was my last day. She started crying and the children were having the time of their life finding the pictures of themselves.

I used MS Office and picassa to set up the pictures. MS Office gave me nice frames and made the pictures look like they were pasted on to the fabric.

Debbi, I'm sorry the fabric was such a PITA, but what a nice gift! Obviously, your mentor teacher though so too! I understand you might have some concerns about showing pics since the children are included in the quilt, but I'd sure love to see it.

Fantastic gift Debbi! I know I'd love to receive something like that as a teacher. It shows you'll make a good teacher too as you 'get it'. :-)

That quilt sounds 'classy!' (Not sorry .... I just could not resist! ;) )

So, what is this about student teaching? Are you headed toward a teaching certificate? Good for you, and good luck. Do keep us posted on your progress. Just yesterday I went to a graduation ceremony as a guest of a friend who earned Master of Arts in Teaching. She is 50+ and just starting a career in elementary schools.

I am getting a preschool teaching permit. Because I have severe dyslexia, I have a lot of trouble taking the required standardized tests to be a credentialed elementary school teacher. On top of that, CA is in such bad shape, that education is on the lowest rung of the ladder so there are more unemployed teachers than any one could ever imagine. Unfortunately, teaching jobs will not be opening up any time soon since the collection of idiots who are running for governor in the primary make Al Capone look like an honest man.
