Method for cutting QSTs?

I've got several Quarter Square Triangles to make for a quilt I've started ... and I hate doing templates so I did a search on the easiest way to make QSTs ... and found several sites that each use completely different measurements!! Each site is reputable, so I don't know WHO to believe!!

One site says cut the squares 1 1/4 inch larger than the finished size, another says 1 inch, and yet another says 3/4 inch. Each site says to sew with a scant 1/4 inch seam allowance. So why the completely different measurements?! Anyone have a clue? Anyone have a recommendation?? I really don't want to have sew them the ol' fashioned way! And I don't want to have to cut the finished QSTs to size after I've sewn them!!

TIA!!

Connie, I just used the X + 1¼" formula. That seems excessive but it certainly allows plenty for trimming so each QST can be pretty/perfect. Polly

Polly, the "finished size plus 1 1/4" " is the correct measurement to be mathematically correct. It should give exactly the right finished size, without trimming. However, I seem to be (as one of my quilt instructors said) "triangle challenged". I always cut larger and trim to size. (Because of the diagonal seam, the size for half square triangles is finished size plus 7/8", double that for QST since there are 2 diagonal seams. ) There are also several forms of "triangle paper" to make QST, one is Triangles on a Roll, and so on. Lots of methods, all end up the same with various amounts of fiddling/measuring/whatever.

Have fun. Pati, in Phx who plans to do some triangles, both half and quarter square with a new Inklingo program. Love Inklingo.... prints the cutting and stitching lines on the fabric with your printer.......

nope, its not at all excessive. for some folks its not enough for those diagonal seam allowances. with HSTs the formula is X + 7/8 but some folks will cut X +

1 and trim when sewn. it'll all depend on how accurate your 1/4" seams are usually if you need to go a wee bit larger than the 1-1/4" on those QSTs or not. i guess if you're at all worried you'll not have them big enough you could cut X + 1-1/2. like i said, all depends on how accurate your own personal 1/4" seams are when sewn/pressed. you could try a sample with straight seams first. cut a couple of straight pieces accurately, then sew with your 1/4" seams as usual. press and measure, how accurate are you really??? that will determine whether or not you need to go any bigger. i'm lazy, i sew that 2 threads scant seam to start with and Bobs your uncle. easy peasy. :) i'm sure you're seams will be perfect too. gawd i babble first thing in the morning. sorry bout that. ok ok, stop laughing you lot, i always babble, i get it. hrmph. groggy in the south pacific, jeanne

Connie, the correct measurement is 1 1/4". That's because you need the

1/4" seam allowance on each side, *plus* 3/8" extra on each side for the "dog ears" that always result with triangles: 1/4" + 1/4" + 3/8" + 3/8" = 1 1/4". HTH! :)

Good grief, Connie. I only needed 14 and it took forever to get them trimmed. You'd better get going. Polly
