quarter square triangle measurement help

Okay... Trying to make something (out of pvc, not out of fabric) with quarter square triangles and my mind is blank on the measurements. I will keep searching for the formulae but I thought I would ask y'all as well....

if i have a square that is 12" on the sides, how long will the bias sides be?

in this picture... I need the measurement from A to the midpoint of the square. or in this Case IV I know c but not a and b

there has to be an easier way! My triangle ruler only goes to 10" sigh....

Well, The basic formula is the sum of the squares of the 2 perpendicular edges equals the square of the hypotenuse. (a squared plus b squared = c squared) You know c =12". So 2 times a squared = 144, a squared = 72, a= 6 time the square root of 2, or approximately 8.4 inches. (actually a tiny bit more than that.)

8.5" (no seam allowance!)

If you want to know why, read on:

This is PVC, I'm assuming no seam allowance?

The center of the the assembled square has right angles on all the triangles, and the two bias edged are the same length. Call this bias edge length a. Then Pythagoras (great mind!) tells us that

2*a*a = 12*12, since the side of the finished square is 12". Then a little maths tells us that a about 8.485, which is near enough 8.5".

If you want seam allowances, we'll try again!

You saved me! Thanks! My mind just wasn't working at all at all.... I am saving this email :D

maybe when all this is done i can go make some of those criss cross coasters and get my sewing vibes back and make some gifts at the same time.

The long side of a half square triangle (right angle, short sides the same length) will always be 1.414 times the length of a short side.

I thought I had something like that written down somewhere but couldn't find it! Thank you! I am saving all of these emails for my self and for use in the next few years with my kiddos
