Cutting HST from sewn strips...

hi Jo, i dont have or use that one but on every other HSTs method i've seen, you need to use 2 7/8" for 2" finished. its 2 + 1/2 + 3/8. the extra is cuz its a diagonal line. i've made them with 2 starting sqs and on a grid, not strips but i cant see why that would be any different. i'd cut the strips 2

Nope. The 7/8 thing is only if you cut squares then make the triangles.

It's been a while since I did that method and then I either used the Bias Square ruler or just a plain old ruler. But yes, you cut 45 degree on your strip and then move the ruler the width of you desired half square triangle block. So, for 2" finished you would move it 2 1/2" and cut. Then you have to square up the other two sides if you are using a regular old ruler. I always over cut my strips. I'd rather lose a little fabric than be short because of a wobbly seam. For a 2 1/2" square I'd cut my strips 2" each.

wow, you can tell i've no idea how that method works, lol, tho sounds interesting. could you please explain it a bit more clearly for the foggy brain here. re your last sentence.... how do you get 2 1/2" sqs when you cut a 2" strip? cheers, jeanne

Say you're making lime green and black half square triangle blocks.

Cut one strip of lime on the bias Cut one strip of black on the bias

Sew the two strips together. Then with your ruler at a 45 degree angle, cut the end of the two color strip. Slide the ruler 2 1/2 inches and cut again. You have a nice two color parallelogram. Then turn your parallelogram so you can cut the other two sides to make a 2 1/2 inch square.

If you have a bias square ruler than you can lay it on the strips with the point on the seam and cut the bottom two sides of the square, then slide the ruler down and cut the top two sides. There's a picture at the bottom of this page:

This ruler doesn't use bias strips. Thank you for your instructions however. I have written to the company to see if they can send me another sheet of instructions.

Well now, Jo, I just hate to state the obvious - but why don't you just stitch some strips together? Then, try this and try that? As smart as you are, I just know you'll have it conquered in no time. Keep in mind that if you cut your strips on the straight grain, all your squares will have bias edges. You may want to cut the strips on the bias.
