VERY, VERY OT Bath soap recommendation?

I have scrubbed a ring of slime-y soap residue from the bathtub for the last time.... I hope! All the deoderant bath soap bars now seem to contain "moisturizers" and I hate the slippery, scummy, slime-y mess they leave in my bathtub. I was using Zest White Water bars, but they seem to be discontinud. The Linen Fresh Zest that I just tried is the slimey type- as is the generic version of Irish Spring soap bars.

Does anyone know of a deoderant bath soap that does not contain moisturizers? I do NOT want some fancy, expensive bar of soap which contains a lot of exotic stuff and that I cannot find locally in this small town. I have a choice of WalMart, two grocery stores and a drug store. We have no allergy issues. I just want a bar of deoderant soap that's easy to find and relatively inexpensive- Lifebouy, SafeGuard, Zest, Ivory, etc. kind of soaps- nothing fancy, please.

Can anyone help me with a recommendation???

we use palmolive gold deodorant soap(didnt see that one on your list). i rarely take a bath(a shower fan here, lol), only if i'm freeeeezing beyond hope in winter and just cannot get warm at all. then its such a hot bath nothing would stick. i dont know if that one will leave any residue on the bath. fwiw. hope you find the one you need, jeanne

I can't help you with a suggestion, because I primarily use French soaps that I buy at a little shop nearby, however, I do want to tell you I totally get what you're talking about regarding the "moisturizing" bars of soap. All the Determologists I have ever seen recommend Dove, but I hate the slimey, scummy feel of it. DH uses it - I use the French soaps - which I stop up on at their annual soap sale & because it's so well made, it lasts at least twice as long as DH's Dove does, so it's quite the bargain IMNSHO! When I was away at retreat last month, I did have to buy grocery store soap, because I don't like those little tiny soaps they put in the rooms & I got Oil of Olay at the store. It seemed to be pretty nice & didn't leave that film on me or the shower & it is widely available at grocery & drug stores, so I guess I do have a suggetion for you after all! Good luck on your search.

I don't think you can get unscented Toms of Maine in Wally World, but that's what the sweetie uses. I had to put a soap dish stuck to the wall to prevent issues of scum from the part of the tub where he kept the bar.

Rather than changing soaps, you might want to consider investing in an automatic shower cleaner. It works very well:

Have you tried just using an inexpensis shampoo? I've been using Suave shampoos as body wash for years. If it gets too drying in winter, I add about a tbsp glycerine to a 16 oz bottle.

Try ours. After years of using fine soaps and spending lots of money at the dermatologists and allergists - and! having hives and miserable itching, DH and I starting using the cheapest one made. It pretty much doesn't contain anything. Our soap brand name is Captiva cocoa butter soap. Captiva is made in Canada and is only sold at the really good cheap places like the Dollar Store and Fred's. We may never know what special ingredient in expensive soap was trying to kill us, or at least make us miserable. Don't care. For cleaning the tub, I just use whatever shampoo I've bought that we didn't really like. They're good for taking down soap scum without taking away the skin on your hands. Smell nice too. Polly

Sheila-

Can you give us an approximate price for the automatic shower cleaner? I haven't seen it when- frequently- buying tub/shower cleaning products. It may not be available in small town America yet???

DH bought ours, and he doesn't remember. I just checked with Drugstore.com, and theirs sells for 27.99. I'd look at Walmart. I'd be surprised if they don't have it.

If you go to the link that was sent to you a bit ago, there is apparently a coupon on it, or at least that is what I was told.

We sold ours before we moved. I could NOT handle the smell of it even after DH would rinse and rinse the shower after. It did a 'good' job for daily cleaning. We tried it for a month and got rid of it. HTH Butterfly

Well, our kiri makes and sells soaps and pamper products so I am completely biased (and have total access to bath fizzies and stuff whenever I want them, neener neener neener!).

I have never understood the point of deoderant soaps. With plain off the shelf soap (castille, glycerin etc) you can smell clean and a bit like soap and water. Deoderant soaps always have a smell to them, a strong one and often a bit unpleasant at least to my nose. I am biased about deoderant anything too I guess, for anything labled as such makes me break out in wicked hives.

I have used palmolive bar soap to make plaiting soap (for braiding leather) and it is inexpensive, did not leave a residue on my leather, nor did it leave an unpleasant smell. For plaiting soap I had to mix it with neatsfoot oil, but still.. Prior to the advent of our kiripet and her soapmaking ways, DH was always fond of, dang the brand name just flew right out of my head, cocoa castille soap. In the white wrapper over next to the Fels-Naptha at the store. Much to the dismay of our daughters I never bought them anything fancier than Yardley's. Never had a scum problem with that either.

Lye soap has always all but ripped the skin right off me, glycerin is better and really really clean on the tub and shower as well. But an inexpensive shampoo or shower gel works just fine and doesn't parch out my skin. Guess my skin just likes detergents better than soap.

With five people, one shower, and a totally anal about cleaning kiripet, I think the thing would run us broke on refills. I just spray the shower by hand after I wrap my hair up, and make sure the curtain is closed so it doesn't hold water. I know kiri sprays the thing as well, and I am pretty sure nobody else does. It works. Besides, we have a a hanging caddy, shelves and pockets held up by sucky cups, three razors stuck on the wall, and two nets of bath toys in there. I don't reckon it would do it all any good to be sprayed with cleaning products religiously.

I used the apray in my shower that you use after each shower. It keeps the shower clean if you start with a clean shower. They even had it in my son's college dorm shower room with instructions to use it after every shower.

Frankly, I think anyone who has issues with soap needs to learn to make their own. It's not hard to do, and you get the kind of soap YOU want, without additives, chemicals, and things you can't pronounce. You can get all your supplies at

Hi Leslie :-) Have you tried Zest? I remember that's the ONLY soap my mom would buy. I'd whine for her to buy something different, and she'd always say no, that Zest is the only soap that doesn't leave a ring. I haven't tested this now (that was 30 years ago)...formulas could have changed. Your post just sparked that memory.
