mural and wall-hanging musings

I've had this web site bookmarked on my desk top as an icon since December

"WOW, how the heck could I make a mural or wall hanging from THAT photo?" I click on it first thing every morning, most time it's pretty stunning. Just the colors alone are awesome. What wonderful, beautiful combinations. Today's "Saguaro Moon"

had me thinking about batiks and hand dyed or painted fabrics. I remember a quilt with metallic thread used for the flash of fireworks that was posted here awhile back and thought, "Oh, those would make great twinkling STARS!" (archives, August 20th-Cluster Crash)

Maybe use a sort of a free form fabric collage similar to the landscape quilt technique for the swirling space dust. Crumpled and swirled silk chiffon, reverse appliqué from under a black background? (archives, August 11-Cosmic Tornado)

Hmmmmmmmmm.......one of these days, one-of-these-days......pondering, pondering.....there has got to be a way to do this. Maybe blow the picture up enough to get separate pixels and go from there. OMG, fordy bajillion little teensy squares to sew together!! I'm not sure Miss Butterfly would have enough time to sit next to me by the couch fanning, patting my wrists, applying cool cloths and slipping chocolate slivers between my blue, quivering lips until the seizures subsided.......but...... Take a gander through the web site, let your mind wander outside of the box, and see what inspiration you come up with, even if it's only a color combination you hadn't considered before. You can click on 'archives' and go back and see past photos, they have a new one up every day. I love this site, it really fascinates me......and honestly, it's not just the pictures, I read the articles too! *wink, wink*

Oooh. The last one is just beautiful! I might have a go at recreating it in Batik! The stars splashed with wax resist on white fabric, then space dye the fabric in the gorgeous purples and pinks!

The style. hand dyed Batik jumped out at me on some of them. Very interesting sight. You sometimes forget about the space photos. We are all so complacent about inter-stellar travel these days, and only pay any attention when "Houston, we have a problem" comes up.

Great photos! (Glad we're getting something for all those dollars put into space research :-) Thread painting comes to mind. Some silky threads, some sparkly, with batik or hand-dyed base...
