make a 12" (12 1/2" unfinished) snowball block, sign the middle:

(you can make those corners as large as you please) make a 4-patch block, sign one patch:

One I was in (a decade ago) used a friendship star, with the middle square in white for the signature

IIRC they worked up very fast, and the 4 inch open space left just the right amount of room for signature, date, and any desired embellishments.
