When sewing a dark burgandy to light cream fabric, do you sew with dark burgandy thread or cream thread? I am sewing a dark burgandy border on a light cream wall hanging. dreamboat

I 'second' Roberta's suggestion of using cream on the cream side, and burgundy on the burgundy. You might have to adjust the way you sew them so you get the bobbin and top on the correct sides! . In message , Roberta writes

Dorothy, I'd use a medium gray or medium-dark taupe.

I use medium gray thread for everything except real dark. It seems to work in just fine.

I don't try to match thread to material. On burgundy to cream, I'd probably use a medium gray.

I have large spools of white, ecru, lt. gray, med.gray, and black for piecing. The only time I use colored threads is for quilting.

If you don't like the look of using one color thread, then use both cream & burgandy thread -- one in the needle & one in the bobbin. Just be sure that the cream fabric goes through the sewing machine on the side that has the cream thread :-). Care to know just how I know about this?!?!? LOLOL CiaoMeow >^;;^<

I tend to use neutral thread colors for piecing, but I'd use a slightly darker one. I find that light threads tend to show on dark fabrics, while the darker threads don't show so much on the lighter fabrics -- when combining both, of course. I'd go for a medium (or darker) grey.

Hi Dorothy,

I would probably use the cream thread for the simple reason that if I forget to clip a thread on the back, the cream thread won't show through the cream fabric, but the burgundy might.

What a prolific quilter you are!

I'd use lighter thread--maybe a gray--a neutral anyway. It will blend in with the cream. Be sure and make a pressing plan.

Let us know how it turns out.

Happy quilting,
