new sewig machine

Good morning

Well I finally did it. I bit the bullet and bought myself a brand new Husqvarna Viking Sapphire 850. I'd been longing for this machine for more than a year now, but =801200 ($1793) was a bit much to pay for what is really a capricious toy as I do have a perfectly functional, good working 35 or so year old Husqvarna combina II (this is from before Husqvarna and Viking teamed up). It's a bit small under the arm though so it makes it a wrestling match to machine quilt anything. Still, the price was a bit high for something I didn't really need. That was until I found a site in the UK that has them for a terrific price. I ended up paying =80 659 ($985) (and that includes the shipping from the UK to Spain. So, that was an offer I could not let go. The new machine will be arriving sometime next week and I can't wait. This has sure been a week for new gadgets! My birthday last Sunday came and went without a present. I had asked DH for an e-book reader. And het got me one; the Sony 700. It was a bit late in arriving so it didn't reach me until last Tuesday. This thing is amazing!!! I need to discipline myself now; time for reading, time for stitching, time for patchwork and quilting. Somehow I have to fit all that into a 70 hour a week job, a dear husband, three daughters and home! Guess I'll give up sleeping forever now!

Enjoy! :) I love my Lily, and my sisters Optima 190 (30 years old and still flying!)

Viking has always been a brand name for Husqvarna. There was, for a shortish while, a north American company also called Viking, which has nothing to do with Husqvarna, so there is sometimes some confusion. I remember my schol back in the early 70's having brand new machines delivered (to replace a collection of dead Singers) when the new arts anf tec block was built. They were all labeled Husqvarna Viking. That must have been 1969/70... I left that school in 1971.

The only machine from the old sewing room to make it to the new building was the Bernina 730, which suddenly looked all old fashioned next to the new Vikings. :D

Eh, who needs sleep, Claudia! A good friend bought the 870 and she loves it. If it had been available, I would have bought it in a heartbeat instead of the SE.

The one thing that you are just going to come to depend on so much is when you have the needle in the needle down position, the presser foot raises just a tiny bit. Enough to be able to pivot the fabric when you are machine appliquéing. Plus it releases the pressure on the fabric and makes it feed so much better. I can machine quilt straight lines without a walking foot.

The lights are great too.

I can't imagine sewing on anything else. It has spoiled me for other machines.

Wow! You are having an awesome birthday week. :-) The e-reader sounds fantastic, and so does the sewing machine--especially at almost half price.

Okay, Claudia, now pace yourself. ;-)

Congratulations, Claudia! My DT just bought a new Husqvarna, and I think it's the same model -- anyway, she just loves it! :)
