New sewing table - free!

Hurrah! I was walking along outside the Tower building at Dundee University, when I saw a man breaking down tables. I asked him what he was doing, and he said that he had been told to destroy all these perfectly good tables and take them to the dump! There were chairs too. It seemed like madness. I asked if I could have a table? He said that was fine. I was perfectly prepared to carry it home, backpack-style, but he offered to drop it off at my house (I live about 15 minutes' walk away). Emboldened, I asked for a chair to go with it. Wow! Within 1 hour, the men arrived at my flat with table and chair. I had already cleared the old table and piano bench and put them in the bedroom. I have installed my sewing machine and UFOs at my new table and chair. How inviting it all looks, and - best of all - it's at a much better height. The chair has a back rest, and feels so much more comfortable than the piano bench was. Perhaps best of all, I saved 2 pieces of furniture from the skip. :) I will post photos on my webshots now.....look on the second page of "My Public Shoebox".

Now, all you have to do is make that chair cozy. I'm more than a little embarrassed to confess that I've made two cushions for a chair with nothing more than left over batting and a few safety pins. It sits great and didn't take any time at all. Polly

Great find! Isn't it a shame that all the rest ended up in the dump! I have a friend who has a trailer, and drives around town looking for good "stuff" that has been thrown away. He takes it to his church for their garage sale, and then if it doesn't sell, takes it to one of the several charity organizations in town. Too bad they didn't get offered on Freecycle, or another similar group!

Great find, Johanna! AND I'll second Susan's comments (and others) about recycling good-condition stuff. Our local dump has a "recycle" area where they put all manner of stuff that's still in good condition... you can take it (if you can use it). Lots of great things left there find new homes - including an electrified ca. 1895 Singer sewing machine (which my DH "claimed" for me on one of his dump runs!)
