NOT OT Intriguing newspaper ad

Found in my small town newspaper-

Quilter's Dream. Entire roomful of quilting supplies. Fabric, machine, serger, sewing cabinet, cutting table, books, fat quarters, etc. Must see to believe! $1500

Sad that some quilter is giving up the 'lifestyle' or maybe sadder still the quilter has passed away. Or maybe it's a happy occasion? Maybe the lucky quilter is getting all new stuff? Nah, not if she/he is giving up their stash of fabric and books.....

Wish a had a couple of spare thousands right now!

Did you not even call to get particulars, or go for a look around, or even a bit of a fondle? I think I sure would have been tempted, even if I didn't have the money to buy it. It's that curiosity thing, ya know.

I just saw a post on my local craigs list from a quilter nearby who has health issues and is moving all her books/fabric/ what-have-you on to other people.

That's interesting. I can't help thinking it is someone who has passed away. I mean, if any of us had collected all that equipment we've never sell it! Or maybe it's just someone who has an unbelievable amount of "stuff" and is culling for space! I went to an estate sale recently because there was "quilting supplies, fabric, tools" listed. The prices were unbelievable. $15 for a 4x24 ruler, for instance. $20 for a cutting mat. Fabric was $2 a yard, and it smelled bad. I could nearly buy "new" at those prices. Sherry

Well, I think I have an explanation for the high prices (at least, the best one I could think of) ... I have a lot of friends that don't quilt and they ALL honestly believe that quilting is, and I quote, a "rich woman's hobby." Which I think is funny considering that we're anything but rich!

And I think that attitude is, for the most part, supported by the quilting industry ... geegaws and gadgets that cost a lot of $$ but do little, "entrepeneurs" always trying to come up with a gadget meant to separate quilters from their $$$ ... face it, most people think that if it has the word "quilt" associated with it, we'll buy it. And with the average sewing machine costin' over $1000, I can't say that I blame them for thinkin' that for the most part. :(

The friend I mentioned that was buying his wife a SM for Christmas? Well, he went to our LQS and was told that he simply *must* spend at least $5000 if he wanted to start his wife off "right" in quilting!! I was shocked ... he had even told her that his wife hadn't even made a single quilt yet, and the dealer expected him to shell out $5K on the possiblity that she might like quilting!!

Needless to say, both he and his wife are a bit disillusioned on quilting now. :(

*sigh*

Oh, to the days that fabric was $2 a yard (the good stuff)!!!

Quilty hugs!! Connie :)

I finally got the courage to phone the person who placed the ad. A reasonably youthful, healthy sounding lady told me she'd changed her mind and she is not going to sell any of it now or in the foreseeable future. Hmph! Just when I got brave enough to consider buying it.

Oh well.....
