Not OT: Relay for Life for Cancer

This morning I was at the high school at 7AM, and helped get things going for registration. At 11AM I walked the survivor lap, and cried the whole way. Then walked another lap. Went back to help again in the registration office. I am home now for a break, and heading back in about a half hour to help again and be there for the luminaria ceremony. I have donated for a luminaria in honor of all our rctq'ers who continue the fight and those who have lost that war.



I am proud to be able to help, I am honored to wear the purple [!] survivor T-shirt, and feel the support of those there at the Relay and those here who have blessed me with friendship.



The online and registration chair made a quilt for the silent auction, in purple, using some of the T-shirts, and machine quilted the motto "Celebrate. Remember. Fight back". See, not OT!

I've never walked a survivor lap that didn't bring tears. I will miss getting my purple shirt this year since I will be in California with my daughter.

At the luminaria ceremony I unknowingly sat behind one of our HR people from work - she was there with her Mom, a 21 year survivor. For a while I put a bead on my necklace for every lap walked, then just gave up doing that. I think it was 5 or 6 miles yesterday. Got home around 10PM. Today I did not do my normal dawn walk, and chose to not go back for closing ceremonies.

In Sept I will work the registration table again, for the Relay being held in Fillmore [about 25 miles out from here]. This may be the volunteer niche I was seeking.

The fire - it is still going in back country. They have closed the Los Padres National Forest. I beleive containement is about 90%, but there have been the tricky winds and very high temps again. My old neighborhood was spared and everyone is back home. I am thinking of going up there in a couple weeks. Thank you for thinking of the fire and the people all involved.

Woo Hoo!! You rock, Ginger. I am so revved up for our Relay for Life on 5 June. We do it over night, with Opening Ceremony and the Survivors walk at 7 PM and the Luminaries Ceremony at 9 PM. At the Closing, June 6 morning, we will have the lucky winner drawn for the quilt my friends made for our Parish Relay team. It is a Double Irish Chain that we call Chains of Hope
