I dropped my _closed_ Olfa rotary cutter. It landed on my barefoot, sprung open and severed the tendon that holds onto the big toe. I needed surgery to reattach the tendon, and then I spent 6 weeks in a cast up to my knee while it healed.

I got my first rotary cutting injury on Monday. Not fun. Not severe fortunately. I've heard some horror stories so I am very fortunate.

It was unexpected, but not odd.

My first rotary cutting injury occurred while I was cutting fabric. I had just changed the blade maybe 10 minutes earlier, so it was very, very sharp. I started cutting some fabric, and the cutter made a strange scraping noise, bounced off some invisible defect in the edge of the ruler, bounced onto my wrist, and momentum kept it rolling for a fraction of a second. Luckily it missed tendons and arteries and just sliced a couple layers of skin.

I told the triage nurse that my rotary cutter attacked me. The ER doc complimented me on the clean, straight incision and said he wished he could make an incision like that. I suggested he try sterilizing a rotary cutter next time. *snerk*

Ohmygod!!! What an odd but awful accident! Who would have thought a closed cutter would turn into a deadly weapon on it's own.

It was very bizzare. It sure taught me not to quilt at midnight, three days before Christmas! LOL, last minute gift sewing. My DH was smart, and had me bring the rotary cutter to the ER with us. When I was explaining to the doctor what happened, he had not a clue about what a rotary cutter is, but DH whipped it out and showed him. Of course that was right before DH passed out.
