Directory

My wife is a quilter and I have been watching this site for a year or so with no posts but lots of reading and learning. However, I am a little confused about the "Directory". Can someone explain the purpose of the Directory and who might want/need to register?

Thanks from Newburgh, IN

LOL! That was me for a few years. It took that long for me to realize that one didn't need to spend all one's time quilting to be considered a "real" quilter. I'm a bit slow :-)

However, in all that time it never occurred to me to ask about the directory. I felt that it would be a bit to the group for a stranger to be asking. Know what I mean?

Before we make this person feel like some sort of intruding mutant on his first post because he is a quiet observer let me say that I have a few personal friends that have been reading this NG for longer than I have and they have never posted. One of those people actually was the person who steered me to this newsgroup. I am sure there are most likely many others that prefer to silently observe and learn rather than actively participate. That is their prerogative. The flip answers he has received to his intro and question would be good reason not to post again in my book. I too have wondered about the purpose of the directory. I think it's a legitimate question deserving a legitimate answer rather than an "inane" retort. Admittedly tone of voice and facial expression does not translate well into text and knowing how many of us tease each other with great amusement because we *do* know each other may not translate well for a newcomer on their first day in the trenches.

So does anyone have informative answers to SGM's questions about The Directory? I'd be most interested in the answers as well.

sorry if i spoke out of turn, Val. i only lasted a short time before i had to post something. dont recall now what it was, probly some 'inane' question as that is what i am good at. if he has been reading for a year+ then he might well have worked out that some of us do know each other in real life. some of us email privately to one another. some of us are just idiots who speak out of turn on a regular basis. some of us know more than the rest of us about quilting and life. some of us............ easy to see that much had he been reading for a year+. i did say i'd leave directory reply to someone else. geez louise. stranger in a strange land, j.

Howdy!

Not at all " disconcerting", Rita, to hear from "strangers" on this ng. As I've been reminded several times, this is a public forum, open to ANY one, ANY time, ANY where. Who knows how many non-posters lurk in the woods? A stranger" is just someone we haven't yet met, who has not yet introduced us to her/his stash, hasn't shown us quilt pics. SGM, The Directory is a list of (mostly) quilters at RCTQ, including names, addresses, their preferred color choices and whatever, put together by volunteers from this group. It's "private" , only those in The Directory receive a copy of The Directory. Btw, there are many here, lurking and posting, who are not in The Directory. By choice. ;-> We manage to trade, swap, beg & receive squishies just fine. Btw2, a squishy is a pkg that comes in your mail and squishes when you squeeze it. Usually fabric or other quilty-type stuff.

You might want to check this out- it's a link to the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) that tells you about squishies, our 'shorthand' abbreviations and The Directory. And welcome! But we'd like to 'talk' to your wife, the quilter, too! ;-)

I too, read far more than I post, Val, and Jeanne's 'inane' comment didn't strike me as particularly aimed at SGM. I suspect if he has been reading for that long it is at least, to some extent, because he enjoys the banter typical here. I seriously doubt any of the regular posters here would purposely set out to offend anyone.

BTW, Welcome SGM! :D May you and your wife read in good health, surrounded by chocolate and stash.

Okay - I had to just smack myself in the head, because it dawned on me what CRAFT means. I thought you were getting much CRAFTIER Jeanne - I like that better than CRS!

Well, you were given the link to the RCTQ website, here's the info on the directory:

What is the Directory or how do I get someone's address?

A directory of everyone who chooses to be in it is updated about two times a year, depending on the schedule of LN, who is in charge of compiling. Watch the newsgroup for posting about the next update. Only people who are listed in the directory are allowed to have it. No one is allowed to give the information in the directory out to anyone who isn't in it. Not everyone chooses to be in the directory, so how do you get someone's address? Ask them for it. Its ok, it wont spoil the surprise if you wait til they forget you asked. Or, ask someone else to ask the person if its ok to share their address with you. Be sneaky. Its ok.

That is taken directly from said website, under FAQs. I notice that only Leslie posted a link for you to find the informaiton and others chatterd (as is our norm), but thought maybe just putting the informaiton out there would work for all who are curious about the directory.

Larisa, incessant meddler, over-achiever - but I only submitted my form ONCE this time!!

Basically the Directory is a voluntary "address book" of some of the people on the group. Reasons for being in/having the directory? Why do you have an address book? Same type of thing. It is a way to contact people off list, send anonymous or surprise "squishies" or cards or whatever. Or to check in on someone who hasn't been heard from in a while. Yes there are other ways to get the same info. And not everyone chooses to participate in the directory. That is fine. But if you aren't in it, please don't ask for it.

SGM, glad you are interested in your wife's hobby. Have you ventured into the quilting waters yourself??

Val, hope the above helps answer your questions too.

Oooh! Oooh! I have a question!!

*waves hand wildly*

How long before we newbies know if we made the cut into the Directory? Or is it one of those cases where if you don't hear *anything* there's nothing to hear?

I'm not trying to pressure anyone or trying to be impatient, BTW. :)

TIA!!

Hugs!!

Another use for the Directory is to get an idea of our demographic. We always have a few folks that report back to the group within days of receiving their copy of the Directory with the number of folks from Canada or Indiana or the number of folks that love blue or batiks. It's always fun to see how many November birthdays we have (she said waving her hand wildly!) or Christmas birthdays. It's amazing how many ways we can sort the data! We have a few analytical types in the group as you will see!

This will give you and your wife an idea of the type of information that is requested. Some of which is required and some of which is optional. We do have some folks that did not enter and of the colors or types of fabrics they prefer and some don't enter their birthday information. And that's ok, we'll still find a reason to send them something and hopefully they will find a project to use it in.

There is no requirement to post on the newsgroup and believe me, our bark is worse than our bite and we are getting better at not feeding the trolls, tempting as it may be. We've had a few flame wars as happens in any large family. If you have been reading posts for a while, you may already know that. But, unless your wife posts, we can't get to know her. The information in the Directory is personal and not meant to be distributed to the masses so we are pretty particular about who gets into the Directory and gets access to our information. Posting on the group and replying to other posts gives us a chance to meet folks and get to know them. But, reading is ok too. And if your wife is comfortable doing that, then that is ok with us too. Welcome to both of you!

If you have any other questions about the Directory, please feel free to email me offline. I am the one collecting the information right now. The form will remain open until the end of January. Then I will hand off the data to my team mate, Karen who will sort it all out and get it distributed.

Everyone will get a reply one way or the other. The Directory form will close to entries at the end of January. Then I do some formatting magic and check to see if the email addresses work properly (you'd be surprised how many bounce). I will then send this file to Karen who will review the entries and make the decisions based on a variety of criteria. After all the entries have been reviewed, the Directory will be distributed via email. We have not set a deadline for distribution since this is Karen's first time with the Directory process. But trust me when I say, as soon as it is reasonably possible, it will get sent. We want it off our plates as much as you want it in your mailboxes.
