NQR - Search engines

Is anyone else having trouble using Google or Yahoo search engines? I Goggled something simple - labrador retrievers, for instance - and get websites that are totally unrelated. Sounds and looks like junk to me.

I don't know what to do! I'm afraid my computer is being infected or something.

Any ideas?

is anything else acting up? did you get the latest MS updates just in case there are any patches in play there. updated your anti virus? run a full scan with it? i scan once a day, update when i boot up and when i shut down or log off each day. ya cant be too careful with all the crapola that those idiots put out there to mess with our heads. no doubt there are more than a few in the works for this week in particular. best ideas i got at the moment. oh and googled with a copy/paste of your wording "labrador retrievers" and all the links on page one were dog related, fwiw. j.

I'm scanning now..... hopefully things will get straightened out. Nothing else seems to be messed up although my computer has been really slow lately. Maybe I need to do a bit of cleaning..... and I'll check on any updates.

speaking of cleaning.... i opened up my tower the other day cuz the noise it was make'n was ridiculous. got out the vacumn cleaner (dont worry, i've done this before, i'm careful not to damage anything or get too close) and my tiny wee brush. i decided to get into a place i'd not attempted before. finally got a cover off part of the power unit. did a brush down (the vacumn grabs that dust that floats up when i do that) of all the bits i could reach and that i could see were dusty but still not satisfied. so i took a fan out (left it attached by its wires) and gave that part a really good clean. put it all back together again and it now runs damn near silent. i was rather chuffed i managed all that without doing any apparent damage. woooooohooooo, i do surprise myself sometimes, lol. j.

My OH and I do that type of maintenance on a regular basis - we have a stone/dirt driveway and the amount of dust and fur from the cats and dogs seems to gravitate to the computer.

I just checked Google and everything is working fine downunder on a very hot afternoon.

Sounds likely - all the first ten hits I get from Google (using iCab 2.9.9 on MacOS 9.1) are dog-related.

I think something must be affecting your DNS (the system that translates names like "google.com" into IP numbers). Either your computer has been got at so it's using a fake DNS server, or you're using a real DNS server and *that's* been got at.

Simple test for this: open http://216.239.59.104/ in your browser. That should give you the Google search page (doing it that waydoesn't use a DNS server). Type "labrador retrievers" into thatand see what comes up. If it's different, you were using a fakedGoogle before.

The result of this is that all the information you normally pass to Google or Yahoo via cookies when using their services is now in the hands of some crook. You will have to change all of it or risk identity theft.

My dear hubby just spent the weekend working on his uncle's computer... cuz it was slower than all get out... and doing the same thing... kept redirecting all of his searches. He was using several free virus checkers... and we think one of those might have been the problem.

Anyway -- eventually he discovered that the machine was infected with numerous viruses and trojans... but the one causing the problem was the Go.Google Virus. You can read a bit about it hear.

It actually even prevented him from downloading programs like adaware and spybot to help figure out what was going on. His email seemed to be working fine -- but everything web related was a mess.

You might want to see if you get to the page above. If you can't even type or paste in an address and get there... then you may need help starting in safe-mode to run software to remove your problems.

I actually did a scan this morning with Windows Live OneCare safety scanner and I had a trojan that the scanner deleted and a virus that is a low risk that wasn't able to be deleted. Google is now working just fine..... however, I will still look into the website you provided. Thanks!!! Oh, my McAfee didn't catch it.

This link refers to Malwarebytes.com which is a GREAT!!! site as far as I'm concerned. When I had a major virus problem last summer it was their tools that helped me get rid of it. The frustrating part was that I got the virus even tho I had Norton antivirus on my machine - the Norton website knew about my virus but the Norton software couldn't clean it up. What a pain! (FWIW, I'm using AVG antivirus now). Allison in Montreal
