Only partly OT

Well, dear folks, it`s great to be back. Here is a brief update.

I took early retirement from my day job last spring, but continue to teach at the university. Having one job seems enough, although my teaching load is considered about half to 2/3 of a full load, depending on the semester.

My DS and DIL presented me with twin grandsons (non-identical) three years ago in June and they are the joy of my life. I have them one day a week, sometimes two, and we have a dozen or so things we do outside or in the nearby mall (riding those machines they have(car, boat, etc.), or playing with Thomas trains in the Indigo store or going to the park) that we choose from and then we get back to my place about noon. After lunch and naps(me too!)we have another dozen or so things to choose from: playing with Play-doh and cutting paper with scissors being the two favourites at the moment. DS picks them up at dinner time.

I have made crib-sized quilts for the boys, but before I got them quilted DIL/DS decided to put the boys in larger beds, so am struggling to add borders with leftover fabric to make them big enough for single beds. The fabric is the yellow and blue colourway from Mark Lipinsky`s Califon line. Quite lovely, but almost TOO bright.

Several LQS`have gone out of business here in Toronto, but there are a couple of new ones, both good and with excellent prices, but not very convenient to me by bus or subway, as they are both in industrial areas; store front rents in Toronto are simply outrageous.. I enjoy visiting the nice people at the stores, and have a once a month quilters`night at one store, but overall I do spend a bit less on fabric!

I`ve been trying to pare down the stash (aren`t we all) to some sort of reasonable level. I have managed to finish a few old projects this year, with the help of a really good mq'er , and have got one more ready to go as soon as it is bound.

And, I bought a new Husqvarna Sapphire about a month ago, (my old one was at least 25 years old) but have been so busy I haven`t had time to get it set up and use it. it will be great though... push button everything, lots of stitches, a thread cutter, and a ten inch throat. I MAY actually be able to learn to machine quilt WELL in the near future.

BTW, it is really comfortable to be back, I am quite surprised at how much I feel at home Thanks for your 'welcome' back wishes.

Good to hear you get to spoil the little ones then turn them back over to their parents ;)

I often come acroos some of our local cowboys. At the grocery store nearest to my house [it is the closest one to the big cattle ranch in the back hills]. Or as I drive past their ranch' smain entrance on my way from our main courthouse to one of the psychiatric lock-up facilities where I clerk a court calendar. Or when I go to my not-so- LQS that is smack dab in the middle of cowboy country.

Gotta love those jeans, boots and spurs on 'em ;)

You may have missed my mentioning it, Lynne, but there's a Viking Sapphire here and she is a Wonderful SM. A quilting buddy leaves it here and quilts with me some evenings or weekend spare times. I don't speak 'Viking' - we are simply not friends but for sure it makes my friend very happy. She stitches pedal to the floor, over pins and yelling 'Charge!'. You are going to love it. Polly

Well, Ginger, we had better plan a cowboy hunt together. Perhaps Mz Flutterby can supervise.

I haven't had a desert ramble since Tucson, 2001. It surely must be time.

I just ignore the Viking part. Specially since both the Pfaff and the Husqvarna are made in the same factory! SInger apparently owns most of the sewing machine names now.

Funny, I didn't even look at Bernina, which seems to be the quilters' favourite.

Looking forward to getting to know my new machine.

Oh, Joanna, maybe it's like having kittens or puppies - having two keeps them company. ;))

Let's see, Sandy in Henderson, NV has a twin sister. I have a twin borther. My mother also had a set of twin girls [5 yrs older than me]. My niece is pregnant, and I told her she may have twins. My mother had twin brothers.

G> Glad to hear your update. I feel for anyone with kids, let alone twins.

Lucky you - having twin grandsons! I have doubts about every having grandchildren. DS1 and wife do not want children, and DS2 hasn't been meeting anyone, and unless he marries someone quite a bit younger than he, probably won't have any of his own..... Hope you enjoy your new machine. The extra space makes machine quilting much more comfortable. I have a Juki with which I do basic piecing and most of my machine quilting. I save my Pfaff for machine appliqué, thread painting etc.
