What color sashing do you think would be best? (Given, of course, that I can find the 'right' fabric in that color/colors.)

These blocks were an experiment. We've got a book in the store (forgive me, I've forgotten its name) that uses a 'stack and whack'ish technic with striped fabric.

I thought I'd give it a try. Love stripes and what they can do to a quilt. Anyway, at first glance I was not impressed with my blocks. For one reason, I wasn't as careful as I should have been in matching the repeats on the fabric prior to cutting. Another reason, and I haven't been able to think this one thru, the patterns are not symmetrical as they are in other similar technics.

In this book, you stack the fabric four deep. Cut blocks going across the strips. I used a 12.5" square ruler. They you re-cut the squares twice on the diagonal. Finally, you sew those four 'identical' resulting triangles together into a square.

And some turn out slightly wonky. Drove two other employees of the store crazy. Said they couldn't stand the 'off'ness.

But when I squared up the blocks and laid them out on the floor, I'm much more pleased than I thought I would be. They remind me of the large, gilded letters in old manuscripts.

But, I digress. What color would you think best for the sashing and has anyone else tried this technic with stripes? Is it just me?

I don't think you're asking for help as much as you're showing off!! How gorgeous!! I have never liked the Jinny Beyer type blocks ... but you have made them simply (though I know that to achieve such beautiful blocks, there's nothing "simple" about them) DIVINE!! WOW!! Jinny Beyer t'ain't nothin' compared to you!! :)

As to sashing, how about a gold or darkish brown? Perhaps a darkish brown with a slight gold "cast" to them?? Not too gold, though, because the emphasis should be on your wonderful canvas/blocks, not the "frame!" And with just a teensy-weensy bit of gold, it'll blend nicely but still let the blocks "pop!"

Really, Joan ... your work is absolutely gorgeous!! I have your WebShots bookmarked and visit it often - and you NEVER disappoint!! :)

Hugs!! Connie :)

Burgundy or green, depending on your decore. It would be great if you had some matching fabric with stripes that you could use cut at a 90 and use that for the sashing strips.

I have that book!! Those are reaaaaaaaaaaaally cool blocks you've made! If you like dark I'd go with either the red or green. If you want to lighten it up just a little and make your blocks stand out more go with the tan.

First surround each block with a very narrow black border. Then use a mostly burgundy with a bit of tan for the 2 in. saching- maybe a marbled fabric. Then a 2 in. navy batik border on the outsides and a final border of a burgundy and navy paisley that has a touch of tan in it- maybe about

4-6 in. wide .

Is *that* specific enough? LOL

Howdy!

Opinion: it's good to have some chocolate in the Thanksgiving feast. We'll start w/ the M&Ms, mixing the traditional milk chocolate (plain) w/ the peanuts M's.

Opinion: At 29-cents per pound, it's a good idea to get 2 turkeys, esp. for a bunch of people who love turkey sandwiches and turkey pot-pie (homemade, of course).

Oh, beautiful quilt, Joan. Dark green sashing, darker than anything else in the blocks. Some gold in the border would intensify the suggestion of a gilded manuscript. R/Sandy

One more opinion: autumn is the best time of the year; ours is blowing away, quickly. ;-)

Joan, I absolutely love those slightly muted colours. I think the collection is gorgeous. Is there any chance you could 'match' that fabulous blue that occurs in quite a few of the blocks? I think that would look rich and gorgeous. . In message , joan8904 in Bellevue Nebraska writes

I think I would go with a marbled gold for the sashing... and if it needs more "pop" then a burgundy or dark purple or the blue (whichever color you want the quilt to "read") in the fabric for the setting stones/cornerstones/center squares.

You know. It is! Well, not exactly. This is made of only one fabric, but because it's a striped fabric, it gives much the same effect (affect?) as the Hidden Wells.

But it is a square cut diagonally and put back together.

Great eye!

Joan...great job ! Is this all one fabric ?...and if so...how much fabric did it take??? I think this is four patch posie pattern? Mary

One fabric. It took 4 large repeats, but I'm not sure how much yardage.

It's similar to stack and whack and four-patch posey and one-block wonder. But in this case, the fabric is cut into strips and the strips cut into big blocks. Mine were 12.5". It would vary, depending on the repeat. The blocks are then cut twice on the diagonal. The stack of four triangles is put back together into one block.

So same basic idea, but another cutting strategy.

I could see this with blue sashing and the dark red for corner posts. Half-inch red border, 1" blue border, and a final border of the original stripe. Roberta in D

Glad you see this blue too! Everybody started talking about green, and no green appeared on my monitor! OK Joan, is it blue or is it green? Roberta in D

Yup, yup, yup! First thing that caught my eye was the repetitive blues, I'd do the 'not the darkest' blue but the next to the darkest, if that makes sense. I showed it to my friend, an art prof at U-Dub, and his eye zoomed in on the gold-ish color that seems to be in all the blocks, that would be his first choice, the blue is a definite "that'll work". He seems to think that gold-ish tone would "make all the blocks 'pop' and tie the units in as a whole".....yeah, he's not a quilter but he appreciates fine art ;) When I suggested the deep burgundy/maroon-ish color as a possible choice he said no, it would muddy things up. We both agreed that the borders should be solid color OR the dark red and/or blue as squares at the intersections framing the blocks and in the corners of the gold-ish border.

There's our combined four cents worth. Neither of us picked up on any green. Val

Yes, blue and green and red and purple and tan and brown and gold. My son the architect said to use a light color for the sashing. Perhaps these 'artistic types' know of what they speak? I know when I've trusted Matthew before the results have been unexpected and always smashingly good. I tend to go safe and obvious with color choices. When I shopping for the sashing, I will attempt to have an open mind.

Thank you *all* for your color suggestions and kind words. The ideas of multiple borders and cornerstones is greatly appreciated as well. Interestinly enough, you all were kind enough to not mention that the blocks are slightly funky and off-kilter. I'm still working on that problem in my mind.

joan p.s. Who is ready to put the turkey breast in the oven and to begin moving furniture so the tree can be put up later this afternoon. Boy oh boy, am I ever going to be tired of that tree by Xmas! But the aforementioned son is going to be here for supper (no turkey, as he's a vegetarian) and can haul the tree up from the basement for us.

The quilt is crying out for some type of crackle fabric line - various manufacturers - the link is only one example - all colours and combinations are available. I thought of this particular one because of the burgundy with the gold but somewhere, I have also seen just a plain gold crackle fabric in one of the fabshop stores sales pages.

How beautious!! It said a black and gold stripped border...black on both sides, gold strip in the middle. (Or an off white with a gold classical Grecian-look stripe print).
