Orientals

Does anyone else have an addiction to Oriental fabric? I can't keep my fingers off it, and I have a bunch. My problem is I can't cut into it. I haven't seen a pattern that I think will lend itself to the lovely prints except for panel quilts.

Anyone out there like me?

Nope. The Oriental prints don't say a word to me. Probably because they don't seem to lend themselves to ducks, bunnies and choo-choo trains. Could be that. However, do save your scraps if you ever take courage and cut them. The leftovers are great in a 'one day' crazy quilt. Polly

...me too, and I share your hesitance to cut into most of them. I have a rather large stack at the back of my cutting table which is threatening to fall over of all Asian fabrics. That being said, I have a Hidden Wells WIP that is mostly in Asian fabrics - 8 of them to be exact - which I am dying to finish.

Also check out 9 - Patch Pizzazz by Judy Sisneros for some interesting ideas using Asian fabrics; also the Japanese Charm by Denise McKenna. She teaches at one LQS near me, in fact the quilt is on display there just now and they are doing classes on it over the next month or so. I believe her patterns are available on-line. This pattern makes use of

7 1/2 " squares to show off the beauty of the prints.

Jan, I *love* oriental prints! I'd started a collection a few years ago with absolutely no plan in mind, but I ended up using a lot of them in a sweatshirt jacket I made (second one down at ) and more not too long ago in a Hunter's Star quilt (at ). I've been trying not to buy more right now, but I'm weakening.... ;)

me me me! lol I adore them! I've been collecting asian/oriental books and wall hanging patterns and I'm planing on using some in a quilt using the BQ pattern from Maple Island Quilts.

So far I've been brave enough to make a couple of panels of Japanese Lantern blocks to go with my dragon wall hanging. I love them but I used up all of one fabric I had and I can't find any more. I can't imagine why I only bought half a yard. What was I thinking!! lol

yes and no, I think I only have one oriental fabric that is not part of a quilt, there are 11 different fabrics in one quilt though! I do love them, but I'm trying to be disciplined and not buy things! The one problem I find with oriental fabrics is they all seem to be medium value, which lends itself fine to some designs, but not others.

I am so addicted its not funny lol. Two more pices arrived yesterday. I have yards and yards of asian fabric and no clue what to do with it. I am afraid to cut it :( The only thing I ever made was the wall hanging faux window for my brother out of an asian panel lol Help me ;)

hmm... they just don't call to me. Lots of fabrics call my name but Oriental and batiks are just not dialling my number. Now give me a blender bright or true red or green or blue and my heart skips a beat.

Kona Bay Fabric puts out a magazine called "Asian Fabric: quilting and design ideas for inspired minds." There's one quilt in the Summer

2006 edition that I'm just sort of hanging onto for a future time. They really do have gorgeous and inspired ways to use those fabrics that most of us have a hard time cutting into. That said, the convergence quilt I made was with Asian fabric, including some gold tone on tone. I fussy cut some of the motifs for applique on the finished product. It worked really well. Maybe something like that?......

And, I have a friend who starts with a cut square (or rectangle) of a motif from the fabric and then uses the oriental fabrics to crazy quilt (big strips) squares to surround the center. At the moment, she is using 30 Asian FQs to reproduce the design of a Persian rug for her brother. Yes, this woman is amazing and artistic and I have no hope of ever making anything that looks as original as everything she makes is. However, it's an idea of oa way to use these gorgeous fabrics.

I have a paid subscription for that mag - however I have yet to get one. I keep writing and they keep telling me I am on the list......

I hope you enjoy your 9- Patch Pizzazz book Jan, I bought mine back late last summer and have really enjoyed mine, not that I've done much with it...but it's nice to pull it out and imagine all of the wonderful creations I 'could' make using it ...when I get the time....lol I bought a large scale Asian - a truely spectacular one - sometime ago and I know exactly which project from that book it will be in.

I pick up the Asian Fabrics mag whenever I see it which isn't all that often, but I really enjoyed the last one I found.

Sometimes I think the only reason for the (ever growing) stack of Asian prints on my cutting table is to torment and tease me....I usually pull out 1 or 2 a day and fondle gently, dream a bit, and replace in the stack...and it is a sickness I'm sure, I'm drawn to that area first in any quilt store...batiks second...

A wonderful jacket Sandy, you are one prolific quilter !!!

A woman in my guild did a fabuolous YBR out of orientals, all in that plum/mauve/celadon colorway. And a LQS near me did a Turning20 quilt out of them. That one really showed off the prints!

Thanks, Alison. Not much quilting going on right now, though. Between babysitting one of my DGSs (age 6) during his track break from school and the quilt show coming up this weekend, I've been chasing my tail. LOL!

Yup I too love them and have been known to buy a fat quarter now and then just for the hey of it. I saw a recipe....sorry pattern for a bento box quilt which would showcase them pretty well. Can't remember where but I can chase it up if you are interested?
